Description

T. B. ATTERBURY. Bottle-Stopper Fastener.
N(' 211,49o. Patented Jan.'21,1 879.
p mp! e UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS B. ATTERBUBY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPER FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,490, dated January 21, 1879; application filed September 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. ATTERBURY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manner of Applying Bottle Stoppers, (lovers, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of devices embodyin g myinvention as applied to bottle-stoppers, the bottle being closed by the stopper. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the stopper being withdrawn, so as to unclose the mouth of the bottle. Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
My invention relates to the construction of that class of devices for securing bottle-stoppers,'&c., wherein a yoke or bail is used in conjunction with inclines on the neck or nozzle of the bottle or like article; and it consists in forming the neck or nozzle of the bottle with two grooves or recesses arranged in the same inclined plane, so that the upper wall of the recess or groove will form a consecutive series of resting or bearing places for the pivotedpoints of the yoke or bail, said recesses being closed at the ends to prevent the escape of the bail when the yoke is turned aside.
I will now proceed to describe my invention specifically, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may make and use the same.
In the drawing, A indicates a bottle or like vessel having the neck, nozzle, or contracted portion a. On this portion a, at two opposite points, I form recesses or grooves b for the reception of the pivotal points of a yoke or bail, (I, said grooves b being arranged in the same inclined plane and crossing the neck or nozzle (1. in such wise that the upper walls of the grooves or recesses will form a consecutive series of resting and bearing points for the bent ends of the yoke (1, whereby the stopper may be easily tightened to any desirable extent.
In order to prevent the yoke or bail d from becoming detached when the stopper is loosened and the yoke turned aside, I form the grooves or recesses b with closed ends, as shown in the drawing; and in order to permit the yoke sufficient vertical play to readily free the stopper from the nozzle, I prefer to curve the upper ends of the recesses 01' grooves b, as shown at n. This latter construction also permits the stopper to be fairly seated before any progressive tightening force is exerted on the yoke by the inclines.
0 indicates a stopper provided with a gasket or rubber packing, and may be such as is in common use.
d is the yoke or bail by means of which the stopper is secured to the bottle, the stopper being usually pivoted on the yoke, as shown at 1', and the yoke having the bent or pivotal ends 70 to enter the slot or recess 12 on the neck or nozzle (1..
When in use, the bent or pivotal ends 70 of the yoke are sprung into the recesses b, and the bottle may be readily closed, when the. stopper is in position, by side pressure on the yoke, causing the bent ends of the yoke to descend along the under side of the upper wall of the slot.
The main advantages of my invention are simplicity, ettectiveness, and the small power required to tighten or loosen the stopper.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The bottle provided on its neck or nozzle with two recesses arranged in the same inclined plane and having a consecutive series of resting and bearing places for the pivotal points of a stopper yoke orbail, said recesses being closed at the ends-to prevent the escape of the yoke or bail, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said THOMAS B. ATTERBURY, have hereunto set my hand.
THOS. B. ATTERBURY.
