Description

('r1 W. CARPJENDER. Galv'anic Abdominal Supporter.. l
. No. 211,319. l Patented Jan. 14.1879.
EN lll 1 Eil- UNITED STATES PATENT GEORGE W. OARPENDER, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT, IN GALVANIVC ABDOMINAL SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2l 1,319, dated January 14, 1879; application filed November 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it4 known that I, GEORGE W. CARPEN- DER, of South Bend, in the State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Abdominal and Uterine Galvanic Supporters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactrdescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of an abdominal and uterine supporter with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the back-pad, showing the manner of connecting the conducting cords to the rear plates.
My invention relates to that class of supports used in diseases of the abdomen or womb, and in which it is desired to produce an electric current; and it consists, first, in the novel manner of constructing the supporter, whereby a lifting-power is exerted on 'the bowels instead of a direct pressure, and, second,
in the manner of connecting and securing the plates in the pads to facilitate their removal for cleansing, Snc.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A B represent the front and back pads, which are constructed with open pockets for the reception of the plates D and E. Y By this construction the plates are readily removable for the purpose of renewal, cleansing, Ste. The backpad is formed as shown in Fig. 2, having a sufficient length to allow the upper band, F, to be carried above the crest of the ilium or around the loins, instead of around the hip-bones, thereby converting it into a simple girdle.
On the lower portion of the front pad are attached the straps G` G, which, passing around and outside of the legs below the hips, draw in the lower edge of the pad, while the perinzeum-cords H H, attached to the upper portion of the pad, tend to draw out the pad. The pubis acting on a fulcrum, the top of the pad is` drawn out and the bottom drawn in,
whereby an easy motion is obtained in breathing, and a lifting-power is exerted on the bowels instead of a direct pressure, which is the objectional feature, and often a dangerous one, in other supporters.
The conducting-cord I is attached to the front plate at c' by means of the hook J, and to the rear pad by the rod K, which, passing through eyes L L on the plates E E, secure the plates in position in the pad, at the same time forming the Ametallic connection between the front and rear plates. On the front plate I attach the screw-cup M to form an electrode, to be used in certain diseases of the womb.
I am aware that the pads and plates I have described are not of themselves new, and I do not claim them, broadly, as my invention.
I am also aware thatthe `principle ofthe electric current and the galvanic arrangements are well {known to electro-tlierapeutics, and these I do not broadly claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a galvanic abdominal and uterine supporter, the pad A, in combination with the straps GG and perinzeumcords II H, attached as described, whereby thetop of the pad is drawn out and the bottom drawn in, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The pads A B, constructed with open pockets for the reception of the metal plates, in combination with the plates D and E, provided' with* eyes L L, and the insulated-wire connection I, provided with the hook J and rod K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The pads A B and plates D and E, in
combination with the binding-post having an insulated stem with metal point and screwcup M, whereby the plate D may be converted into an electrode, as and for the purpose set forth. Y
