I ROCKING HORSE Filed April 24, 1937 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Attorneys Patented Mar. 22, 1938 ROCKING House Paul Glamos, St. Paul, Minn. Application April 24, 1937, Serial No. 13s,s2s- 2 Claims. (01. 2'12--55) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in rocking horses and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts whereby said device may be operated without the necessity of the user or occupant placing his feet on the ground or floor.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a device of the aforementioned character which may be expeditiously adjusted to accommodate children of different sizes.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, attractive in appearance, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view through the 0 upper portion of the device, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will 35 be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic base which is designated generally by the reference numeral I, said base being substantially rectangular in plan and including side members 40 2 of angle iron and end members 3. Secured to the base I and rising therefrom at an intermediate point is a substantially U-shaped upright l of channel iron which is provided with metallic braces 5. The lower portions of the legs of 45 the substantially U-shaped upright 4 diverge, as
at 6. Upper and lower cross members I and 8,
respectively, are mounted in the upright 4.
Mounted transversely in the upper portion of the upright 4 is a removable bolt constituting a shaft 9. The reference numeral I0 designates a metallic frame of channel iron which is journalled, at an intermediate point, for swinging movement in a vertical plane on the shaft 9.
. 55 The ends of the frame I 0 are rounded or curved,
as at II. The reference numeralsI2 and I3 designate braces in thelframeim; l
Mounted on the side portions of the frame II) on one side of the upright 4 and rising from said frame are representations I4 of horses heads. 5 Mounted for longitudinal adjustment on the frame Ill on the opposite side of the upright 4 is a seat I5. The seat I5 is mounted on a metallic loop I6 (see Fig. 4) which slidably encloses the frame I0 and which is secured in adjusted 10 position to said frame I0 through the medium of a thumb screw I'I.
Rising from the forward end of the seat I5 is a horn in the form of a substantially U-shaped handle I8 which may be conveniently grasped by 15 the occupant of said seat I5. The reference numeral I9 designates reins which are connected to the horses heads I4. The reins I9 may be looped over-the handle I8. Suspended from the forward portion of the seat I5 are stirrups 20. 20
The reference numeral 2I designates a coil spring having one end connected to the cross member I and its other end connected to the brace I2. The reference numeral 22 designates a comparatively long coil spring having one end 2 connected to the cross member I and its other end connected to the brace I3. It will be observed that the brace I3, to which the coil spring 22 is connected, is located a greater distance from the pivotal mounting of the frame I0 than the brace I2 to which the spring 2| is connected.-
It is thought that the operation of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. When using the device the child, of course, occupies the seat I5 and places his feet in the stirrups 20. The child may steady himself on the seat I5 by grasping the handle I8 or, if he is old enough to steady himself, he may hold the reins I9. The spring 22 yieldingly supports the weight of the child who, by bouncing or otherwise manipulating himself on the seat I5, may cause the frame I0 to rock or swing. The spring 2| functions primarily as a steadying or balancing means. It will thus be seen that a device has been provided which may be operated without the necessity of the occupant engaging his feet with the ground or floor. The device may be adjusted to accommodate children of different sizes by removing the shaft 9 and inserting same in a pair of lower openings or holes 23 in the upright 4. When this is done the springs 2| and 22 are connected to the lower cross member 8. By loosening the element I I the seat I5 may be conveniently moved to any desired position on the frame I0.
PATENT .QFFI EQ It is believed that the many advantages of a rocking horse constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A rocking horse comprising a base formed of an open frame, a U-shaped upright invertedly arranged and having its ends secured to said base at an intermediate point, a frame journalled, at an intermediate point, to the legs of said upright for swinging movement in a vertical plane, coil springs having one end connected to the upright beneath the frame andtheir other ends connected to said frame on opposite sides of.
the upright, spaced representations of the heads of animals mounted on the side portions of the frame on one side of the upright, and a seat mounted on said frame on the opposite side of said upright.
2. A rocking horse comprising a base formed of an open frame, a substantially U-shaped upright invertedly arranged and having its ends secured to said base at an intermediate point, a cross member mounted in said upright, a shaft mounted in the upright above the cross member, a metallic frame journalled at an intermediate point on said shaft for swinging movement in a vertical plane, said frame including spaced, parallel side portions and braces extending between said side portions, said braces being on opposite sides of the upright, coil springs having one end connected to the cross member and their other ends connected to said braces, representations of the heads of animals mounted on the side portions of the frame on one side of the upright, and a seat mounted on said frame on the other side of said upright.
