BABY JUMPER.
Application filed November 29, 1922. Serial No. 604,078.
To all to 710m it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT T. REID, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby Jumpers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in amusement devices for babies or children, and has particular reference to such a device serving as an exerciser, commonly termed a baby jumper. An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is extremely light, strong, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, portable, and may have its partsreadily sepa rated so that they may be shipped in a compact manner. 7
Other objects and advantages of the invention willv be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention,
lciligure 2 is a side elevation of the upright, an
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the upper swinging frame, parts being broken away.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a lower stationary frame as a whole, preferably formed of a fiat board 6,
having a large longitudinal opening 7 cut thereln, providlng spaced dlverging arms 8,
preferably integral with the board 6. This makes for lightness, while imparting to the device suitable strength. Extending across the arms 8 is a relatively thin and light bottom member or board 9, rigidly attached to the arms 4, by any suitable means.
The numeral 10 designates an upright, provided at its lower end with a depending tongue 11, forming shoulders 12. The tongue 11 projects into the opening 7 and engages the side walls of the arms 8. This tongue has a longitudinal opening 13 formed therein, for receiving a transverse pin or rod 14, passing through openings in the arms 8. Diagonal braces 15 are detaohably connected with the brace 10, near their center, by means of screws 16 or the like, while I the lower ends of the braces 15 are detachably connected with the board 6 and the arms 8, by any suitable means. It is preferred that this connection be detachable, in order that the braces may be separated from the bottom. or stationary frame 5, and the parts arranged in a flat or close relation, for shipment, as is obvious. The upright 10 is provided at its top with a rounded end 18, having vertical slots 19 therein. This rounded end also hasa longitudinal opening 20, for the reception of a pivot element or pin 21.
The numeral 22 designates an upper swinging frame, as a whole, preferably formedof a flat board 23, having a large I longitudinal opening 24 cut therein, forming longitudinal spaced diverging arms 25. The free ends of these arms are connected by a transverse member 26. Depending from the arms 25.near and spaced from the board 23 areeye-bolts 27 engaging therewith, and projecting into the slots 19,: and pivotally receiving the pin 20. This construction is particularly advantageous, as the pivotal connection is entirely covered so -that the babies fingers cannot have access thereto, while operating the device, and hence the liability of the fingers being pinched is very remote. The curved surface of the end 18 contacts with the arms 25 and serves to carry the load, while the eye-bolts 27 effect a suitable pivotal connection between the upper frame and the upright 10.
The numeral 28 designates a suitably stiff retractile coil spring, having its lower end provided with a hook 29, to engage in selected spaced eye-bolts 30, attached to the board 5, as shown. At its upper end, the spring 28 has connection with a bolt 31, projecting through a longitudinal slot 32 and carrying a winged nut 33. It 15 obvious that the spring 28 may be adjusted toward and away from the upright 10 and also the tension of the spring may be regulated by turning the nut 23.
The numeral 34 designates a seat for the baby or child, depending from the free end of the arms 25. ,This seat is preferably formed of canvas or some other suitable material which may readily be washed, for sanitation. The seat 34 embodies sides 35 and an end 36, These sides and ends are 1 passed about the arms 25 and transverse member 26' and maybe detachably, secured thereto by any suitable means. I may employ headed studs 37 secured to the frame, for insertion within button holes or openings formed in the sides and end 36;, as is obvious. Any suitable means may be ein- Secured to the ployed for this purpose. bottom of the seat is a strap 37, extend 'ing'npwardly and providing openings 38, through which the child inayinsert his legs,
The strap 3'? isdetachably connected by any suitable means withatray 39, secured to the arms 25,as shown.
' In 's'e, the baby or childis placedwithin 1 the seat'34, and his legs extend downwardly through the openings 38 so that his feet may'en'gage the bottom or floor member 9.
The child is therefore supported by the upperfranie at a point beneath the frame and fthere'is practically nofliability of the ner, without 'of injury.
device turning over. The ehildfmay raise andlo-w'er himself, and this will cause the upper frame t swingv upon its pivot. l t is obvious that fh ave' provided a device which will enable the child toparta k'e ofipropeif exercise, in an interesting and a musing n a'n It 'is to be understood, that the form of my invention herewith shown and described to be takenas a preferred ex; a'mpleof the same, alnd that various changes in the shape, size, andarr'ang ement of parts "may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my inventiomor'the scope of the subj'o'ined claim-Q Having thus described my invention, I claim v I In a baby jumper, a lower stationary frame embodying a body portion having an :opening between said arms, an upright provided at its lower end with a tongue exing, said upright being provided at its top with a rounded head and spaced substantially vertical'slots and an opening extending longitudinally through said rounded head and passingthrough said slots, a
