Description

March 15, 1938; w. o. WELLS 2,111,345
ANTIWEAR GUARD FOR GLOVES Filed May 6, 1936 I r zz/en zor LIAM .WELLS /1 ITOENEYQ' Patented ,Mar. 15,
UNITED STATES;
PATENT oFFicE 5 3 whims.
This invention relates to improvements in gloves and has for its special object to prolong the life of certain parts of the glove by the use of a reenforcement in the nature of a seam insert, applied in the region of that part of the seam which connects the thumb with the palm.
Reenforced seams have,=of course, been heretofore used but the constructionofthese-seams in the-region referred to has resulted in shortening the life of the glove due to friction.
I have been able to improve the seam reenforcement, and to prevent undue wear at the seam, by placing a reeniorclng element at that point which is submitted to the greatest strain during prehensile action of the hand, and by extending this. reenforclng element outwardly to form a flap-like shield which overlies a portion of the palm and'which extends from the thumb part of the seam proper to the thumb and palm Part of thesame seam. I
Features of the invention include the use oi an insert for the purpose described, as well as the p cific construction and location of the same.
In the drawing: s
Figure 1 is a face view of'the palm side of the.
glove with the thumb fully abducted and showing one form-and position of the insert; and
Figure 2 is a cross-section on line 2-2 of Figure 1 additionally illustrating the seam construction.
The invention is shown as applied to a leatherglove, but may be applied to any seamed glove which has a thumb and palm seam. Numeral .I
indicates the palm part of the glove which part also forms one part of the thumb I. Numeral 4 indicates the other part or the thumb and numeral 5 indicates the thumb and palm seam,
stitched as at 8.
Referring to Figure 2, it'will be seenzthat the insert 1 extends outwardly irom the seam to be shieldingly interposed to protectvagainst seam hidden on the metacarpalsurtaces of thumb and index and middle fingers, particularly when the thumb is abdu edr p sfle (oi. emits) "In Figure 1 the general contour of the visible part of the insert is shown, and it is seen that the shield is tapered from a midpoint 9 in opposite directions to points HI and M, and'that it has a curved outer edge i2.
The shield extends from" some phalangial part of the thumb seam proper to a point in the meta-carpal, portion of the seam which secures thumb and palm portions of the glove. The size and position of the insert may be varied to suit the particular make of glove. In this instance, the point of emergence at W is up posed to the proximal phalanx of the thumb, and the point of emergence at H is opposed to the meta-carpus of the thumb.
The practice of this invention has resulted in substantially strengthening the seam'and at the same time has reduced friction to a minimum.
I claim as my invention:
1. A glove having a seam which connects an outer thumb section'to an inner thumb section and to the palm, and a swingable wear flap embedded in and projecting outwardly beyond the meets the inner and outer thumb sections.
2. A glove having a seam which connects an outer thumb section to an inner thumb section and to the palm, and a swingable wearilap anchored in the seam and projecting outwardly seam at the portion of the seam where the palm I therebeyond, said flap extending lengthwise of the scam in the region where the palm 'meets the inner and outer thumb sectionsirom anupper terminal point well below the upper end of the thumb to a lower terminal point well above the lower end of the palm. g i 3. A glove having a seam which connects an outer thumb section to an inner thumb section and to the palm, and a crescent shaped swingable wear flap inthe region where the palm meets the inner and outer thumb sections, said wear flap projecting outwardly from the seam and merging into the seem at its opposite ends.
