lM PROVEMENT EN NECK-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,013, dated December 17, 1878; application filed October 23, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. HART, J12, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckear, which improvement is fully set forth in the followin g specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of a scarf embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is arear view thereof. Figs. 3 to 9, inclusive, are views of detached portions.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Tips of scarfs and ties have been heretofore stifi'ened by pieces of card-board, sheet metal, 850., which, however, are inelastic, liable to break, and expensive, and the band requires to be of considerable length in order that the securingpin will only penetrate the portion unoccupied by the stifi'eningpiece.

My invention has for its object the remedy of the aforesaid defects; and consists of a tip constructed in skeleton form.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a neck-scarf, consisting of the loop a, folds b b, and band 0, said loop a having on its rear the securingpin d. The fold b is shiftable, in order to enlarge the space at the top of the scarf, as at e, for the ready admission and removal of the band, as is well known.

To the free end of the band 0 there is connected a skeleton tip, B, which may be made of wire in various forms, and the object of the same is to stiffen the end of the band, in order to cause its ready introduction into the space 6.

Owing to the elasticity of the tip, it is not liable to break or lose its shape, and the inclosing fabric of the band is held properly dis tended. Moreover, the open or frame -like shape of the tip permits the securing-pin to engage with the band at the portion surrounding the tip without being restrained by the same, whereby the band to its extreme end is available for engagement with the pin, and only a short band is required, the consequent saving of silk and lining, or other fabric, in the length of the band being a matter of considerable importance.

The skeleton-tips are produced at less eX- pense than pieces of card-board and sheetmet-al, and easily secured to the band with or without the aid of stitching, clips, or other fastenings.

The space 0 at top of the scarf requires to be opened or enlarged in order to admit the v band and secure it to the pin (1 when the scarf is to be adjusted to the neck. To accomplish this, the fold b or b is shifted or moved upward through the loop a, and afterward drawn downward to tighten the band.

The upper part of the fold requires to be stiffened, and for this purpose I interpose in the length of said part a wire or skeleton frame, B, which is strong, light, cheap, and elastic, and not liable to bend, break, or lose its shape.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, "and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The scarf-tip B, constructed in skeleton form, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
