HAMMER ATTACHMENT Filed June 26, 1936 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 1, 1938 2,110,057 HAMMER ATTACHMENT Francis J. Scheurer, Mankato, lidinn. Application June 26, 1936, Serial No. 87,511
1 Claim.
This invention relates to hammer attachments and has for the primary object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character which may be easily and quickly adapted to a hammer head of the claw type to provide to the head a fulcrum which will permit the extraction of nails without danger of bending or otherwise damaging said nails so that they may be again used. With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 Ba side elevation, partly in section, showing a hammer with an attachment adapted thereto and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view showing the attachment.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the other end of the attachment.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a conventional type of claw hammer. including the usual claws 2 formed integral with the body 3. The striking portion 4 is integral with the body portion 3, the latter having the usual eyelet to receive the handle 5. A hammer oi this type when employed for extracting nails usually brings about bending of such nails rendering them unfit for further use. In order that a hammer of this kind may extract nails without danger of mutilation or bending, the nail must be pulled in a straight endwise direction and in order that a pull be made upon the nail in this manner my attachment is employed and consists of a sub stantially U-shaped body portion 5 providing a curved fulcrum face i. The substantially U- shaped body adjacent one end has an opening 8 through which extend the claws 2 of the hammer. The other end of the body 6 abuts the body 3 of 5 the hammer and is yieldably held thereagainst by a contractile spring 9, one end of which is pivotally connected to the body 6, as shown at In, while the opposite end is provided with a hook or eye i i to engage a notch l2 formed in the body 6. The 10 spring is passed about the striking portion 4 and body 3 of the hammer.
In operation, with the attachment applied to the hammer the body 6 is brought into engagement with the board or like device in which the nail is driven. The claws 2 are placed to engage the head of the nail with the head of the nail spaced from either end of the claws. By an upward lift on the handle 5 the handle will fulcrum on the body 6 exerting a straight endwise 20 pull upon the nail so that the nail will be extracted without bending or mutilating in any Way.
As the hammer swings on the body 6 as a fulcrum the nail and claws may have a relative movement which will prevent the nail head from twisting off. 2r
Having described the invention, I claim:
A hammer attachment comprising a substantialiy U-shaped body presenting a curved fulcrum face and having an opening adjacent one end to permit claws of a hammer head to pass therethrough with the other end of the body bearing against the head of the hammer, said last named end of the body having an aperture adjacent one edge and a notch adjacent its opposite edge, and a contractile spring passing about 3: the head of the hammer and having one end permanently received by said aperture and its other end detachably received by said notch.
FRANCIS J. SCHEURER.
