Description

T. w. ANDERSON.
THUMB TACK. APPLICATION FILED MAR: 10, 1921.
'1 ,409,81 3 Patented Mar. 14, 1922.
UNITED STATES THORE W. ANDERSON, 0F ARLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
THUMB TACK.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, -THORE W. ANDERSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at- Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thumb Tacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact 'description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to fasteners for draftsmen, architects and artists for securing paper to the drawing board and has for 1ts primary object the provision of a thumb tack which may be applied in the usual way but which may be removed without marring the paper or straining the prongs and bending or breaking the same.
The invention consists of a thumb tac having a raised crown and a marginal flat rim roughened on its lower or engaging face to prevent slipping, said crown having opposed slots and opposed prongs, the one being disposed opposite the spaces formed between the other.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodi-; ment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, I
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a-thumb tack embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a side view in line with the slots,
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2 in line with the prongs, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical central section showing a puller in cooperative position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1921.
Patented Mar. 14, 1922.
Serial No. 451,325.
The fastener comprises a head of-circular form and a pair of opposed attaching prongs or points. The device is up from sheet metal of roper gage and temper and may be of any esired size. The head comprises a marginal fiat rim 1, and a raised crown 2. The attaching prongs or points 3 are disposed at diametrically opposite points and are set in from the outer edge of the rim. Slots 4 are formed in raised crown 2 at diametrically opposite oints adjacent the flat marginal rim 1. 'Fhe rim 1 s corrugated or roughened to preventtearing and slipping.
The thumb tack is applied in the usua way. When it is required to remove the tack, theslots 4 come into play. A puller is provided and presents the form'substan-v tlally as illustrated in Figure 4, being substantlally of U-shape and having inwardly extending nibs 6 of such construction as to readily enter the slots 4 and admit of the tack being withdrawn by an upward pull on the device 5; It will thus be understood that the tackmay be withdrawn without SllbJBCtlDg the prongs 3 to lateral stress which usually results in bending or breaking the same, thereby rendering the tack unfit for further service. It is observed that the slots 4 are disposed intermediate the prongs 3 and the latter in turn are located intermediatejhe slots 4. The force applied to the puller 5 when extractin the tack, is uniformly distributed on 83.51 of the prongs 3, and the latter are withdrawn by a dlrect pull in line therewith which obviates any lateral strain with the resultant advantages stated.
What is claimed is:
stamped or struck 1. A thumb tack comprising a head of.
circular form having a marginal flat rim and a centrally disposed raised crown, theposed intermediate the said slots.
3. A thumb tack comprising a head of eifcular form having a marginal fiat rim In testimony whereof I afiix my sign'atur and a centrally disposed raised crown, the in presence of two witnesses.
marginal rim, said marginal rim being corlatter having opposed slots adjacent the flat rugated 0r roughened, and a pair of prongs Witnesses:
disposed intermediate said slots and set in IDA ANDERSON,
-wardly from the outer edge of the rim. I QHNORE C. FRANCIS.
