This invention relates to a newor improved device which can be used either as a paper fastener or clip for binding or hold- I The object of'the invention is to design a device applicable for the purposes specified,
which will be of cheap andsimpleconstruction and efficient in use. The device is such that it can be used repeatedly without being distorted or damaged, and easily and readily l5 withdrawn from the papers which it is serving to secure together, or from the surface of the map, chart, showcard, etcetera.
An advantage accruing to the invention is that practically no damage is done to the paperswhich are held together by it, as it is unnecessary to make the comparatively large holes which are necessary in connecting together papers with some of the most common types of paper fasteners. The device according to this invention, however, gives all the advantages and security of such types of fasteners.
The invention will be fully explained in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the device is shown drawn to an enlarged scale. In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of one form of the device.
Fig. 2 is aside elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the device in use for securing together a number of separate sheets of paper.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a modified form of the invention.

Fig. 6 is an elevation illustrating the use of the device as a map tack, showcard holder or the like. 1
Referring to the form ofthe device illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 and 6, which admits of its being made of suitable steel wire. the device comprises a sharpened or pointed back pin portion 1, with a head or enlarged front portion 2 overlapping a part of the pin portion 1 at the end remote from the point. In this form of the device the head portion 2 is shown made by bending the wire into square or rectangular shape and placing said front or head portion 2 diagonally overthe upper part of the underlying portion of I the pin 1. In this way the head portion 2 is formed as a square or rectangular frame open at the centre, as indicated at 3.
The underlying portion of the pin 1 is kinked, shaped or bent inwardly, as indian catedjat 4, so that it projects into the open frame. As shown in Fig. 3, the sheets of paper, et cetera, 5 are gripped or held between the bent underlying portion 4 of the pin 1 and the sides of the frame 2 by the 5 tension put upon said parts by the sheets of paper inserted between them, which tend to force the pin 1 and frame 2 apart.
The portion 6 of the pin 1 between the head 2 and the sharpened extremity 7 is shown bent forwardly slightly so that the point 7 does not protrude outwardly or rearwardly unduly when the device is in use. The frame 2 from the top corner 8 to the points 9 is bent slightly backardly or in wardly, and from the points 9 to the bottom corner 10 is bent slightly forwardly or outwardly. Bending the frame forwardly or outwardly to the bottom corner 10 facilitates the insertion and withdrawal of the device and ensures the paper, et cetera, being more firmly gripped by the device owing to the paper being buckled or bent between the pin portion 1 and the upwardly bent portion of the frame.
As shown at 11 the part of the pin 1 below the frame 2 may be serrated or roughened to increase the grip of the device on the papers and prevent it accidentally disengaging the papers. The top of the device, or the part which joins the pin 1 to the frame 2, may also be serrated or rough ened, as indicated at 12, so as to afford a nonslipping surface which will prevent the papers slipping when the device is in use. In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4; and 5, the front portion or head 2 is shown 1 made as a solid square or'rect-angular piece 13 formed in one with thepin 1. The piece 13 is bent inwardly or towards the pin portion 1 from the top corner 14 say to the points 15, and then outwardly or forwardly to the bottom corner 16. The piece 13 is fashioned with a depression at the back which forms a substantially spherical protuberance 17 into which depression the kinked or bent portion 4 of the pin 1 projects. The pin 1 is of substantially the same shape as in Figs. 1 to 3, and it may be serrated or roughened in like manner.
The head or front portion of the device may, if desired, be embossed or otherwise ornamented in any preferred and suitable manner.
That form of the device shown in Figs. 4 and 5 may be stamped or otherwise made out of any suitable metal.
In Fig. 6 I show the form of the device illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 used as a map tack; 18 representing a tab or the like on which may be indicated any desired particulars or information. The tab 18 is shown gripped between the head or front portion 53 and the pin or back portion 1, the pointed extremity of the pin being stuck in position in the map or chart. As any particulars can be set out on the tab 18, the necessity for the use of an index or indices can be avoided. The heads or front portions may, if desired, be of various colors and/or otherwise marked to make different sorts of indicators.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the nature indicated, comprising a front part in the form of a frame, a back part in the form of a pointed pin, and a part connecting said pointed pin at a back part in the form of a pointed pin, and
a part connecting said pointed pin at the top to the top corner of said frame, the pin being shaped to project forwards into the frame and to co-operate with said frame to grip the material between them, the frame being bent from the top corner rearwardly in the direction of the pin and then bent forwardly in the direction oft-he bottom corner, said pin being also bent forwardly in its lower portion below the bottom corner of the frame, as set forth- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
