Patented June 20, 1933 UNITED STATES LOUIS D. MANNING, OF ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA PAPER FASTENER Application filed September 22, 1931.
My invention relates to improvements in paper fasteners of the T-shaped type, wherein a fiat metal strip is bent upon itself to form a T-shaped head and a pair of parallel bendable legs which may be separated to prevent the removal of one or more of a plurality of sheets held to a back, and which operates in conjunction with a pair of shorter legs bendable to secure said fastener to said back to prevent loss or removal of said fastener when straightened to permit the removal or mtroduction of additional sheets.
The primary object of the present mvention is to provide a new and improved paper fastener.
A further object of the invention is to provide a new and improved paper fas-, tener of T-shaped type which may be fastened to the outermost of a plurality of sheets, or to a back to which said sheets are Secured, to prevent loss of said fastener when the same is straightened to an moperat ve position when removing or inserting addltlonal sheets.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device of the character set forth which is snnple and economical in construction and operation, and having a maximum efficiency.
I accomplish these and other ObJGGtS by means of the improved device dlsclosed 1n the drawing forming a part of the present application wherein like characters of reference are used to designate s1m1lar parts throughout the specification and drawing, and in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to F g. 1 but show ing the application of the devlce;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the form shown in Fig. 4 but applied or secured to a backmg stri 6 is a plan view of a further modification F 7 is a side elevation, partly in section, of Fig. 6, and showing the device applied or secured to a backing strip; and
Serial No. 564,276.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation, partly broken and partly in section, of Fig. 7
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 is used to designate a paper fastener of the T- shaped type usually formed of a flat metal strip, having the usual bendable parallel legs 2, separable to secure a plurality of sheets, mounted or threaded upon said legs, together.
The fastener 1 is nested with a second fastener of similar form and shape but with shorter legs 3 bendable to secure said first fastener 1 and legs 2 thereof, to the outermost of a plurality of sheets 4, held together by said fastener 1, or to a suitable backing 6 upon which said sheets 4 may be mounted.
By means of this novel arrangement the fastener 1 may be secured against removal and subsequent loss, while straightened to an inoperative position during removal or insertion of additional sheets.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have illustrated a modification of the invention wherein the caps 7, which are at present provided on certain fasteners l, are provided with integrally formed lugs 8, corresponding to the shorter le s 3 disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing.
In this type or modified form, the cap 7,
which is secured to the fastener 1, is, by means of said lugs 8, secured to the outermost of a plurality of sheets 4 or to a backing 6 upon which said sheets 4 may be mounted.
In this form of the invention it is obvious that said fasteners may be eflectively secured against removal and subsequent loss when the legs 2 are straightened to permit the insertion or removal of additional sheets 4.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8, I have disclosed a further modification, which is similar to that shown in Figs. 4 and 5, excepting that the shorter lugs or legs 8 are arranged at right angles to the legs 2 of the. fastener 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A paper fastener comprising a fastener of the T-shaped type having a pair of separable legs for penetrating and fastening a plurality of sheets together, and a second fastener nest-ed with the first fastener and having shorter separable legs for securing said fastener to one of the outermost of a number of sheets secured by said first fastener to prevent removal of said first fastener from said sheets.
In witness whereof, I hereunto set my signature.
LOUIS D. MANNING.
