UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
SAMUEL SMITH7 OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,972, dated December 17, 1878 g application led November 12, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SMITH, of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Bode; and do hereby declare that the following is et full, clear, and exact description tl1ereo',reterence being had to the drawing accompanying this specification, and forming port thereof.
)onlhods have heretofore been constructed with the bottoni and base or rim separate from the body, such bottom and base or riln being sometimes nmdein sepa-rate pieces, and sometimes in one piece.
My invention consists in forming the lower portion or foot of :L oool-hod, with vertical oorrngutions, and en annular concave-convex bend, and the bottoni with on upwerd-projeeting vertically-corrugated wai-ll, t-ting in the eorrngzitions of the lower portion or foot, and n ihm ge projecting into the bead, whereby the lower port ot the hod is re-enforced :it the point of its woll, where eonl strikes and wears it the most, and the edge of Said bottom is protected from the fai-lling Gool es the hod is being filled.
In the drawing, Figure 1 shows e hod in vertical central soot-ion containing' my improve ments, and I1`ig.2 is a. horizontal section token through the line o a: of Fig. 1.
d is the body and base or rim struck up out ot one piece of sheet-iron, which is corrugated et its lower portion, Z1. c is the bottom, with a, iienge, d, which flange is snapped into the recess ofthe bead e on the inner surface of the body7 end then secured by rivets f f, 85o, This bottom is also struck up out ot' one piece of sheet-iron, and may be corrugated :it time ot' being so struck up by tools made for that purpose. Vhe-n corrugated the parte are pnt together. The Corrugated w21-Ilot the bose tits snugly in the eorrugetions of the lower por. tion or foot of the body, thus adding very materially to the strength ofthe hod.
Byoonstrnoting the body and bose or rim all in one piece, weakness et the bose of the hod by reason of the joining of two pieces ot' metal by double-seeming or otherwiseis overcome, and the durability of the liod increased.
I claim- The cool-bod, having the eonoavo -oonveX bend e, ond vertically-corrogated lower portion or foot, D, and the bottoni having the upward-prQiect-in g verticallycorrugated wall fitting snugly Within the Suid corrugated lower portion or foot, and provided with L :flange ritt-ing in the bead of the body, substantially :Ls deserlbed.
SAMUEL SMITH. XVitnesses:
JAMES H. HUNTER, WILLIAM H. LEWIS.
