Description
H. G. PEARSON. Metallic Postal Envelop.
No. 210,959. Patented Dec.17,878.
N.PETERS, Pham-Limansnnn, WASHINGTON. C
UNITED STATESPATENT Qrrron.
HENRY G. PEAR-SON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC POSTAL ENVELOPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,959, dated December I7, 1878; application tiled October 1, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. PEARsoN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Postal Envelopes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in postal envelopes; and the invent-ion consists in a metallic box, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,\I.will now proceed to describe its construction and epe-ration, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of the top and bottom separated. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a side view of box with the top in place, showing the use of an elastic washer. Fig. a is a vertical section, showing washers inthe top and under the lower flange of the top. Fi@l 5 is a perspective view, showing locking device. Fig. is a top view ot' the bottoni part or body of the envelope. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the top is used with a cylinder having a corrugated surface.
In the drawing, A denotes the top, and B the bottom, of the envelope. These parts A and B are stamped from or formed of sheet meta-l. The top part, A, screws down on the ont-side ot' the bottoln'part, B, as shown in Fig. 1 of drawings. The bottom edge or flange, O, of the top part is made Haring, as shown. Both parts A and B are formed with iianges D and E, to protect the screw-thread from being dented or mashed in from contact with hard matter in the mail.
On the inside of the top part is arranged a rubber washer or packing, F, (shown in Figs. et and 7 of drawings,) to prevent the contents of the box sittin g or lcakin g out.
A rubber washer, G, which also serves as av packing to prevent the contents of the box leaking out, may be arranged upon the dange E. One or bot-h of the washers may be used, as either serves as a spring to lock orjain the thread, and thereby insures the contents of the envelope.
If desired, the ange C may be provided with lugsor projections H, as shown in Fig. l oi'drawing, and the upper side of the iiange E maybe provided with corresponding shaped countersinks I, as shown in Figs. 2, 5, and 6 ot' drawings, there `being in these figures no gasket corresponding to G in Fig. 4. 'When the top is screwed down in place the flange C, by reason of .its iiaring shape, sp1-ings the lugs or projections H int-o the conntersiiiks I, and thereby locks or insures the proper retention ot' the top. In this case neither of the washers is used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described postal envelope, consisting of two parts, A B, both parts being HENRY G. PEARSON.
