IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS.

Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,807, (lated December 10, 187B application filed october 29, 187s.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES Saitennr, of Rochester, in the county ot' Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to provide a lock for doors, drawers, and other purposes, which can be applied with less labor and at less expense than locks of the ordinary construction.

Heretofore such locks have been constructed with a back plate having a lip through which the bolt projects, said lip being of a length equal to the greatest width ot' the back plate.

In order to form a proper ange for attaching the lock to the door or drawer, it is necessary that the back plate should extend hevond the sides of the lock-plate, so as to project over the edges of the recess in which the loch-case is set. length to the greatest width of the back plate in the ordinary locks, it is evident that a recess must be cut in the edge of the door or drawer, in order to let said lip set iinsh with said edge, so that the door or drawer may be properly closed.

In forming this recess great care is necessary to get it ofthe exact depth and conformation of the lip, in order that the lip may set neatly and snugly in place. This involves considerable labor and expense, besides being a tedious and delicate job.

The design of in v invention is to obviate these objections and dispense with the recess for the lip, whereby the door or drawer may be quickly prepared for the reception of the lock, and the lock readily and neatly applied.

To this end "my invention consists in constructin g the lock with a cylindrical lock-case havin g a horn which is adapted to project through a suitable aperture in the door or drawer, and provided with a back plate havin a lip the length ot' which is less than the greatest width ot' the back plate, whereby a ilange is formed for securing the lock to the door or drawer, and the recess for the lip is dispensed with, the lip setting in a continuation ot' the recessvin which the lock-case sets, as more fully hereinafter specified.

In the drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view ot' a portion ot' a door having my improved lock attached thereto. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section of a door or drawer, showing my lock in position.

Now, as the lip is equal in' Fig. 3 represents a perspective view ot' a portion of a door or drawer, showing the recess for the reception of the locl-case5 and Fig. 4, a vfront view of the lock detached.

The letter A represents the lock-case, which is cylindrical in form, the internal works ot which may be of the ordinary or any approved construction.

B represents the back plate., which may approximate a circle in shape, or maybe of rectangular or polygonal form. Said back plate is of greater width than the lock-case, forniing a iiange around the saine for the screwholes l), by means of which the lock may be attached to the door or drawer. The said back plate is provided with a lip, C, which is of a length less than the greatest width ofthe back plate, fory the purpose hereinafter explained. s

The front of the lock-case is provided with a horn, D, which sets through an aperture, E, in the door or drawer.

In applying the lock to a door or drawer, a circular recess, F, is formed in said door or drawer by means of a suitable boring-tool ot a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the loclccase. From this recess the door or drawer is cut away to the edge of the door, forming a rectangular continuation of the circular recess of a width equal to the length of the lip. The lock is then set in this recess, the dan ges formed by the back plate setting over the sides of said recess, and the lip tilling up the rectangular continuation of the circular recess, sett-ing flush with the edge ofthe drawer or door.
