PATENT OFFICE mnoivmonANroAL Moron Howard F. MacMillin, Mount Gilead, Ohio, as-
signor, by mesne assignments, to The Hydraulic- Press Corporation, Inc., Wilmington, Del., a
corporation of Delaware Application June 1, 1933, Serial No. 673,872
3 Claims.
This invention relates to hydro-mechanical motors, and in particular, to devices for guiding and retracting the plungersof such motors- One object of this invention is to provide a.
5 hydro-mechanical motor operable in one-direction to advance a platen or ram, and retractable in the opposite direction byymechanism consisting of a tie member urged along guide members byv means of the coil springs, or similar yielding means, and including a flexibleelement passing over pulleys in the tie member.
Another object is to provide a hydro-mechfinical motor, as described in the preceding'pararaph, wherein the tie member is, provided with an aperture through which vthe motor cylinder loosely passes, thereby enabling the motor cylinder to serve as an additional guide member during the reciprocation of the tie member. QIn the drawing: I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hydro-mechanical motor and retraction mechanism of this invention. i
Figure 2 is a vertical section along-the line 22in Figure 3. v
chanical motor shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail,- 2 and 3 show the hydro-mechanical motor of this invention as consisting of a housing 33 containing a hollow ram chamber 3i, to which accessis obtained by way of the cover plate 32. The latter is opened by releasing the latch 33,
and swings upward on its hinge 34 (Figure 2).
Reciprocably mounted within the ram. chamber 35 36 as by the set screw 31 in a hollow socket 38. The piston rod 35 passes through a stumng box 39-, having a packing 40 adaptedto prevent the passage of liquid out of the ram chamber 3!. Beyond the stufling box 39 the piston rod 35 passes through a drainage chamber 4! with a drainage conduit 42 leading back to the fluid tank, or other source from which the workingfluid is obtained. The piston rod 33 then passes through a bore 43 and enters a cylinder chamber 44, situateii in the interior of a hydraulic cylinder 45.
" 1 I The drainage chamber 4| and the conduitv 42 are tion, fluid pressure is admitted to the cylinder chamber 44 through the coupling 41 and the Figure 3 is a top plan view of the'hydro-me- Figures M is a-movable ram 35, attached to a, piston rod.
' The pressure fluid forces the piston 46 solely in a forward direction. To retrieve the piston 10 46 and the ram 35 connected to it by the pisfton rod36," retrieving means are arranged as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. Secured in the end plate 52 of the ram chamber 3! are a pair of guide rods 53, around each of which a helical 15 compression spring 54 is coiled. Arranged to -slide to and fro on the guide rods 53 is a plate 55, through the holes 56 of which the guide rods 53 loosely pass. The sliding plate 55 likewise contains a. pair of rectangular slots 51, in which are arranged rotatable pulleys 58, around each of which passes a chain 59. One end of each chain 59 is secured to a hook 6!], anchored in the end plate 52 of the ram chamber 3|, whereas the opposite end of each chain is secured to 5 the movable ram 35by another hook (it anchored therein and passing through an aperture 62 in the end plate 52.
In operation, when the ram 35 is forced for- ,ward through theaction of the pressure fluid upon thepiston 46, it' pulls the chains 59 with it, causing the sliding plate 55 to move downward upon the guide rods 53, compressing the helical spring 54. When the fluid pressure is released the energy stored up in the helical springs 54 forces the sliding plate 55 backward, causing the chains 59 to pull the ram 35 back to its starting position. .When the piston 46 and the ram 35, connected to it, have been forced downwardato their extreme forward position, the piston 46 uncovers the port 63, thereby permitting the pressure fluid to rush outward through the conduit 34 to any other hydraulic apparatus which may be desired under certain circumstances to operate in sequence with the previously described apparatus, and forming no part of the present invention.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within'm'y invention such modificationsv as may benecessary to adapt it to varying conditions anduses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters inder thereon, a plunger-therein, a platen on said plunger, guide members amnged on opposite sides of said plunger, a tie member mounted for reciprocation along said guide members and having an aperture substantially surrounding the outer surface of said cylinder in relatively slidable relationship therewith whereby the cylinder. is I adapted to assist the guide members in retaining"- the tie member in its proper position and pathrot motion, a flexible member secured at one end to sa'idmlaten and passing'movably over said tie member to an anchorage at the opposite end of said flexible member, and yielding means ar-- ranged to urge said tie member in a direction adapted to oppose the working stroke of said "plunger.-
2. In combination, a frame, a hydraulic cylinder thereon, a plunger therein, a platen on said plunger, guide members arranged on opposite sides 01 said plunger, a tie member mounted for reciprocation along said guide members and having an aperture substantially surrounding the outer surface of said cylinder in relatively slidable relationship therewith whereby the cylinder I is adapted toassist the guide'members in retaining the tie member in its proper position and path of motion, a flexible member secured at one end to said platen and passing movably over said tie member to an anchorage at the opposite end of said flexible member, and yielding means arranged to urge said tie member in a direction adapted to oppose the working stroke of said plunger, said guide members including a pair of rods arranged substantially parallel with the axis of reciprocation of said plunger whereby to cause the tie member, plunger and guide members to occupy the minimum space.
3. In combination; a frame, a hydraulic cylinder thereon, a plunger therein, a platen on said plunger, guide members arranged on opposite .sides of said plunger, a tie member mounted for to anchorages at their opposite ends, and yield-- ing means arranged to urge said tie member in a direction adapted to oppose the working stroke 01 said plunger.
