1,016,299. Reciprocating pumps. SOC. ALSACIENNE DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES. Nov. 25, 1963 [Nov. 26, 1962], No. 46470/63. Heading F1A. An hydraulic coupling for regulating the stroke of a driven member e.g. the piston 80 of a reciprocating pump operated by a fixed stroke drive member 4 comprises, a piston 60 slidable in a fixed cylinder 64 and connected in tandem arrangement to a piston 10<SP>1</SP> slidable in a movable cylinder 38<SP>11</SP> itself slidable within the fixed cylinder 64 and secured to the pump piston 80. Motion is transmitted to the movable cylinder 38<SP>11</SP> by oil trapped in a chamber 46<SP>1</SP> defined by the head of piston 60, the cylinder 64 and the head of piston 38<SP>11</SP>. The stroke of the pistons 38<SP>11</SP> 80 is terminated when a stop 70 secured thereto engages an adjustable abutment 93 which controls the withdrawal of a rod or chain actuated slide valve 96 whereby the oil in the chamber 46<SP>1</SP> is drained through orifices 106, 106<SP>1</SP> into a tank 92 and therefore no longer moves the connected pistons 38<SP>11</SP>, 80. The pistons 10<SP>1</SP>, 60 continue to the end of their fixed stroke oil being sucked from the chamber 46<SP>1</SP> through a valve 56<SP>1</SP> into a chamber 44<SP>1</SP>, which is increasing in volume due to the inward movement of the piston 10<SP>1</SP>, the chamber 46<SP>1</SP> receiving make-up oil through a pressure operated non-return valve 88. At the commencement of the return stroke the valve 56<SP>1</SP> closes thereby trapping oil in the chamber 44 whereby the piston 10<SP>1</SP> returns the piston 38<SP>11</SP> to the position shown where a plunger 76 contacts an abutment 78 to open the valve 56<SP>1</SP> to allow oil in the chamber 44<SP>1</SP> to pass to the chamber 46<SP>1</SP> together with oil drawn from the tank 92 through the valve 88. The opening of the slide valve 96 may be controlled mechanically, electrically or as shown hydraulically.
