MATTRESS rRo'rEo'roR Frederick Y. Briscoe, Newton, Mass.
Application June 4,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to devices especially adapted for securing rubber and other sheetings firmly to mattresses to prevent wrinkling and creeping thereof, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which is adjustably and easily appliedto the sheeting and the bed and in such a way that the usual bed covering will not be interfered with nor the tucking of the latter under the mattress as customary in bed making and will permit a saving of the amount of material of the sheeting or protector by eliminating the necessity of the tucking of the sheeting or protector under the mattress.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention,
reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a mattress and spring with my invention adapted thereto and to the protector or sheeting of a mattress.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the device disassembled.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view showing the device applied to a protector or sheeting.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates a conventional type of bed spring supporting a mattress 2 having placed thereon a protector or sheeting 3. It has been the customary practice to tuck the edges of the protector or sheeting between the mattress and spring to retain the protector or sheeting in proper place upon the mattress and against wrinkling or creeping. This requires that the protector or sheeting be of a size considerably larger than the top of the mattress and even when secured in position as described will wrinkle or creep under a person occupying a bed. To prevent creeping or wrinkling of the protector or sheeting and to permit the construction thereof with less material my invention is employed which consists of pairs of securing devices, said pairs being located at opposite sides of the bed with one securing device of each pair located adjacent the foot of the bed and the other securing device of the pair located adjacent the head of the bed.
1935, Serial No. 24,958
The securing devices when applied to the protector or sheeting and fastened to the bed spring will positively prevent creeping and wrinkling of the protector or sheeting and will in no way interfere with the usual coverings of the bed nor the tucking of such covering between the. mattress and spring.
Each securing device consists of a bar lhavin rounded ends 5 and a staple or eye 6 secured thereto and positioned intermediate the rounded ends 5. A split sleeve 1 is received in the bar 4 with the eye or staple projecting outwardlyi therefrom to be engaged by a hook 8 of an adjustable strap 9 carrying at its free end a snap fastener ill. The protector or sheeting is placed about the bar 4 and the latter with the protector or sheeting applied thereto is inserted in the sleeve 1 with the protector or sheeting extending through the slotted portion of the sleeve. The bar binds the protector or sheeting against the sleeve and thereby becomes firmly secured to the protector or sheeting. The strap 9 is then passed under the mattress, as clearly shown in Figure l, and the snap fastener is connected with the spring.
A device of the character described will be manufactured and sold at a low cost and may be readily adapted to any protector or sheeting now in use and its use will permit the making of protectors or sheetings of less material than heretofore employed, than also necessary to secure the protector or sheeting in place by tucking the edges thereof between the mattress and spring.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A securing device comprising a bar having surface portions adapted to engage sheeting passing thereabout, a sleeve having a slit extending from end to end thereof and receiving the bar and a portion of the sheeting by inserting the bar end wise into one end of the sleeve withthe sheeting extending outwardly of the sleeve by way of the slit, said bar having a diameter less than the diameter of said sleeve to provide a space between the sleeve and the bar filled by the sheeting passing about the bar to establish a frictional contact between the bar and the sleeve, and a loop secured to the bar and extending through. the slit to lie partially outwardly of the sleeve.
