Description

J. N. GREENE. Street-Sign.
No. 210,250. Pa ten ted Nov; 26, 1878.

N. PETERS, FRDTO LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON! D C- UNITED STATES" PATENT Orin-Ion- JOHN N. GREENE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, IND., ASSIGNOB TO WILLIAM H. TUCKER AND ROBERT S. DOBSEY, OF SAME PLACE-ONE-THIRD TO EACH.
IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-SIGNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,250, dated November 26, 1878; application filed June 3, 1878 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JoHN N. GREENE, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street Guides or Signs, of which the following is a specification:
- enlarged scale, which more clearly shows the manner of connecting the two parts of my device. Fig. 4 is an alternate construction, showing one arm formed-on each one of the two parts A and B, instead of both on one, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows the device formed as in Fig. 1, except that the part B is shown in the form of a bolt or rod, instead of a piece of flat metal.
In said drawings, those portions marked A and B represent the two parts of which my device is composed; O, the bolt, and G the 'nut thereon, by which the parts A B are connected together. The parts A and B are formed of plates or strips of metal. Ordinary band or hoop iron, of suitable width and cut to suitable lengths, is the material which I prefer. The part A constitutes the arms A A, and a portion of the clamp D which encircles the lamp-post. The part B forms the other part of the clamp or clasp D.
By a slightly different construction, as shown in Fig. 4, the arms A A may be formed one on each of the parts A B, instead of both on one. I regard the construction first described as preferable, however, it being the easier to form from the straight strips of which the device is composed. The part B may also be in the form of a rod, as shown in Fig. 5.
in the part A are formed slots, through which the bolts 0 0 pass, and which allow the sizeof clamp D to be varied, so as to fit different-sized posts. In the part B are formed.v holes through which the bolts also pass, but which are preferably of only sufficient size for that purpose, and so located as to bring the nut close into the angle formed by the bend in said part, said angle thus forming a secure lock for said nut, and avoiding the trouble of holding it by other means while the guides satisfactory manner.
As will be readily seen, my device, being made-wholly without castings, and of a very simple form, is much cheaper in construction than those heretofore made. It is also much more durable, as thematerial, being of wrought metal and flexible, will stand more rough usage than cast metal could possibly do.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a street-guide, the combination of the two parts A and B, one or both of said parts being constructed of sheet metal, and together forming both the arms and the clasp, and being suitably bolted together, forming the entire guide, substantially as herein shown and specified.
2. In a street-guide, the sheet-metal part A, forming the two guide-arms A A, in combination with the clasping or clamping part B, for attaching it to a lamp-post, substantially as herein shown and specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 28th day of May, A. D. 1878.
