Description
Patented Dec. 14, Y1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
(el. 7414.1) Y
(Granted under the act of March 3,1883, as amended April 30, 192.8; 370 O. G. 757) This application is made under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended by the act of April 30, 1928, and the invention herein described and claimed may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to me Yof any royalty thereon. Y
My invention relates to improvements in fire tools in which an attachment or construction is made on an implement for digging; with the object of using one tool in fire fighting Work either as an ax or as a shovel, or both. My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure I is a front elevation of a shovel with a cutting bit formed thereon;
Figure II is a detailed perspective View of the cutting edge; and
Figure III is a front elevation, with cutting bits Y detachably mounted on a shovel blade.
Similar numerals refer to similar throughout the several views.
parts By referring to the drawing it will be seen that a shovel I is constructed with an ax bit 2 formed on the side of its blade 3. This ax bit 2 is an integral part of shovel I (Figure I). Ax bit 2 may be hushed in with the front and back surfaces of shovel blade 3, with its cutting edge protruding therefrom. The ax bit 2 may be of hardened tool steel and have a linear groove 4 (Figure II) formed to be conjugal to LLI shovel blade3 and pass over its heel 5, which linear groove may not extend for the entire length of the ax bit but stop just short of the upper end of the bit whereby one end of the groove is closed by the remaining end portion of the bit and the other end of the grooveY is open, extending -to the end of the .ax bit. It may be locked there by a rivet or pin 6, or by a sprung or tight nt, a clip, welding, brazing, or such common means.
It is obvious that the double-bitted ax effect may be procured on shovels by the use of ax bits on both sides of the shovel blade (as shown 5 in Figure III), as well as the single-bit effect (as shown in Figure I), or right and left hand single-bit nre shovels may be made.
In Vthe case of the single-bit iire shovel (Figure I), the dynamic balance is slightly in favor 10 of the cutting operation, but of no material hindrance to lire shovelling in view of the advantages of the combination of operations this tool facilitates. However, to assist in handling a this tool, I prefer that the handle 1 may be 10 Octagon, or such controlling shape, for gripping.
I do not limit myselfV to any particular type of Vshovel or spade, shovel blade, shovel handle, or to their equivalent, or to any particular shape, size or Weight of cutting bit 2, or any particular 20 form of construction of this combination. v
Having thus fully described my invention, what 'I claim for Letters Patent is:
An attachment for a shovel blade, an ax bit r having a cutting edge rigidly and removably at- 2" cached to the extreme upper portion of said blade and extending laterally therefrom, said ax bit having a linear groove in its edge opposite the cutting edge and extending from the lower n end of the ax bit to a point just short of the 00 upper end of the bit, said groove being adapted to receive the upper portion of the shovel blade, the ax bit extending slightly above the shovel blade and the shovel blade and the ax bit havr ing apertures in alignment with each other 3 through their thicknessesV adapted to receive a securing member.
OTTO HENRY SCHOENBERGER.
