[Also in Group XXV] In a cutting implement, comprising cutting blades formed of crossed levers mounted on a pivot pin and urged apart by a concealed spring encircling the pivot pin, the crossed lever members comprise drop forgings each having an elongated recess apertured to receive the pivot pin and forming a chamber to receive the spring, the ends of which bear against oppositely disposed inner walls of the recesses to open the blades. As shown the blades 10, 11 of pruning shears are formed with shanks 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP> peened or spot welded to pressed steel handles 12, 13 and are mounted on a screwthreaded pivot pin 14 passing through apertures, the wall of one of which is screw-threaded at 17<SP>1</SP>, in elongated recesses 16. A ball bearing 21 between the ends 19 of a spring 18 encircling the pivot pin and enclosed in the chamber formed by the recesses 16 also acts as a stop limiting the opening of the blades. The shears are provided with a fastening device comprising a notch 22 on the shank 10<SP>1</SP> and a catch 25 operable through a slot in the handle 13 and slidable on the shank 11<SP>1</SP> so that the tooth 27 engages the notch 22. A friction spring 23 prevents sliding of the catch and if, during use, the catch is pushed into locking position, the tooth 27, strikes the projection 22<SP>1</SP> and is returned to the non-operative position. In modifications the catch member of the fastening means is pivoted and the blades are scissor blades.
