M. E. CONVERSE. Table.

'UNITED STATES PATENT Carnon;
MORTON E. CONVERSE, OF RINDGE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,187, dated November 26, 1878 application led February 26, 1878.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, MoRToN E. CONVERSE, of Rindge, in the county of Cheshire and State oi' New Hampshire, have invented a Combined Box and Table; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication- Figure l being a central vertical section of a collar-box, the cover of which forms the body of a toytable when separated from the box; Fig. 2, a bottom view of the box-cover or table-body separate, showing the standard of the table, but without the feet thereof 5 Fig. 3, a side view of the table complete, Fig.
4, a view, in perspective, ofthe table-feet separate. v
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
My invention, though it may comprise the combination of boxes and tables of any desired size, is more especially intended to form a combination of small packing-boxes and toy tables, the box being useful to contain certain articles to be packed therein for sale, and after purchase to furnish a@ t'oy table for children, and thus afford a 'double utility.
Particularly the combination of a collar-box and toy table, as represented in the accompanying drawings, accomplishes a specially desirable purpose, the combination being very e/convenient and compatible; bpt, boxes for toy tea-sets and other toys may be very neatly made to combine tables therewith in the construction.
The box body or sides A may be of cylin drical, oval, or angular form; and since the cover or top B forms thel body of the table, that will be of corresponding form. The bottom C, being generally of the same form as the cover, may be removable and similarly applicable as atable, but, ordinarily, it is best to attach it permanently to the sides of the box, which consequently remains for use'as a box or receptacle after the cover has been appropriated for a table; also, the cover may be reappropriated as a cover for the box after being used as a table.
As the most convenient and suitable way ot attaching the cover B to the sides A of the box, I cut a groove or grooves, a, in the under side of the' cover, to fit over the upper edges of the sides, as shown. Thus the cover is held on without any fastening. A similar groove, b, may be formed in the bottom C for a similar purpose, and the bottom may be secured to the sides or body of the box by glue.
lAlthough for some uses of the box the standard or other support or supports of the tabletop B may be permanently attached thereto, yet for most purposes of the box it is necessary, or at least desirable, to have all or a part ofl the table-support removable therefrom and reattachable thereto. Thus, for a collar-box, as
represented in the drawings, a central supporting-standard, D, may be permanently attached to the top or body B, since the collars in the box will fold or bend around it; but the feet E E are made removable from the standard D, so that they can be packed separately inside of the collars in the box. By
, this construction, also, a considerably smaller box can be used for a given size and height of table.
The mode of forming and attaching the feet to the standard, as shown in the drawings, is
simple and convenient for the purpose. There' are cross notches or grooves c. d in the lower end of the standard, into which the feet, crossed and halved together, it snugly. Thus the feet can be removed from and reattached to the standard lat pleasure; For other uses of the box, the standard also, or the whole supportingpart of the table, may be removable from the top for packing closely in the box, and reattached when the table is to be reconstructed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.-
A box having a cover, B, adapted to form a 4table-top, and providedI with a standard, D,
and legs E E, or equivalent supporting parts,
partially or wholly detachable from and reattachable to the same by means of the slots o d in said standard, or their equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified. v l
MORTON E. CONVERSE. In presence of- EZRA S. STEARNs GHAs. S. RUssELL.
