Description
G; W. WIGGINS.
Plow.
Patented Nov. .19, 1878.
NITED STATES" PATENT QFFIGE.
GEORGE VVIGGINS, OF QUTHBERT, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 10,176, dated November 19, 1878; application filed April 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WIGGINS, of Cuthbert, in the county of Randolph and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, Fi g. 3 is a side view of the lower part or heel, of my improved plow; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device for fastening the plow blade or point to the heel, detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of plows known as bull-tongue plows, although it is applicable also to other forms of plows; and it consists in an improved construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawin g,Ais the plow beam or stock, made of iron, and split longitudinally in the front part to form two tongues, which are twisted, corkscrew-like, in opposite directions, to form an upper and lower hook, denoted by a and b, respectively, as shown. The rear part of the beam is curved, and is, at its end, provided with two or more perforations, c c.
B B are the handle-braces, which arepivoted, at their lower ends, in a bolt which passes through the perforation 0, their upper divergin g ends being pivoted in the handles 0 O, as shown. The front ends of the handles are pivoted in a keeper, d, one on each side of a slide, D, which moves freely on the straightforward part of the beam, and may be secured on any given place thereon by means of an ad-- justable wedge, 6, provided with lugs f f at each end, to prevent it from fallin gout of the slot in the slide and getting lost.
E is a U-shaped piece of iron, pivoted at its front part to beam A at g, so as to swing freely up and down. The lower part of this piece forms the heel of the plow, to which another piece, E, is welded, leaving a narrow slot, it, between the two. The upper part of piece E has a series of perforations, "i t i, by means of which and a bolt or'pin, k, the parts E E may be adjusted in their relation to the p10 w-beain.
The device for fastening the plow blade or point to the heel-plow consists of a T-shaped piece, having a shank, l, and cross-piece m. To the lower end of shank l is secured a slotted piece or washer, a, which bears against the under side of the heel. The screw-bolt o of the plow-blade F is first passed through slot h between parts E and E, and then throu gh the slot in the washer a, when it is secured in place by the nut q. The cross-piece m serves as a shoulder or brace for the point F, so as to keep this rigidly in position and prevent it from moving laterally.
By this construction and combination of parts, the plow may be adjusted or set in four different ways, viz: first, by moving slide D forward on the plow-beam; second, by adjust ing piece E in the end of stock A by means of the pin or bolt is in the manner described; third, by adjusting the plow-blade in slot h and, fourth, by changing the whiffletree-link from the upper hook, a, to the lower hook, b. By these several adjustments the plow may be set at any desired depth or angle with but little trouble, and, besides, the construction and combination of parts are such as to make an exceptionally strong and durable plow, suitable for a variety of work, and which may be readily and easily manipulated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the slotted standard E E and blade or point F, of the slotted washer at, having an obtuse-angled shank, l, provided with a cross-piece, m, bearing upon the upper edge of the blade or point F, and headed screw-bolt 0, having nut q, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the beam A, of the handles 0 0, supported at theirrear ends upon said beam by the pivoted braces B B, and connected at their forward convergent ends to said beam by the keeper or yoke d, secured to the slide or frame D, keyed to the beam by the key or wedge e, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the beam A, havmg a number of apertures, 0 cf, of the bifurcated U-shaped Standard E E,*11aving a fixed perforated arm, E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEO. XV. \VIGGINS.
Witnesses JOHN MARTIN, CHAS. F. BLOEKER.
