This invention relates to fasteners for closures and more particularly to a combined bolt and latch bolt for a closure, such as a door.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a combined bolt and latch bolt arrangement such that the bolt and latch bolt may be moved freely into and out of their locking positions from one side of the closure and the latch bolt either may be moved freely into and out of its locking position from the other side of the closure, or may operate in conjunction with means for automatically locking it in its locking position.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description in conjunction with i5 the accompanying drawings: in which,

Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views similar to Fig. 4 illustrating different positions of the various parts;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of the combined bolt and latch bolt;

Before explaining in detail the present invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illus- 4 tratedin'the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the pur- 5 pose of description and not of limitation, and it is not intended to limit the invention claimed herein beyond the requirements of the prior art.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and comprises a 50 door casing I0 having a doorway in which a door I2 is movably mounted. A hollow casing i5 is secured upon the inside surface of the door l2 by screws I6 and is divided by a partition I! into chambers i8 and I9 adapted to slidably receive 55 respectively a latch bolt 2|] and a bolt 2|.. hollow casing is secured upon the edge of the door casing H) ,by screws 26 and is positioned adjacent' to the end of the casing l5 and in alinement therewith. The casing 25 is divided by a partition 21 into chambers 28 and 29 adapted to receive the latch bolt 2|) and bolt 2| respectively when they have been moved into their locked positions.
A bolt actuating member 30 is slidably mounted in a slot 3| in the bolt 2| and projects through a slot 32 in the casing IS. The actuating member 30 is adapted to engage the abutments- 33 and 34 formed by the end of the slot 3| to permit the bolt to be moved into or out of its locked position by movement of the actuating member 30. The inner end of the member 30 is provided with a projection 36 extending in the longitudinal direction of the bolt and toward the casing 25. A lug 31 projects from the latch bolt 2!! through a slot 38 in the partition I! in the path of the projection 20 36; A lug 39 projects from the latch bolt 20 through a slot 49 in the partition I! and into a groove 4| in the bolt 2|. A shoulder 42 forming the inner end of the groove 4| is adapted to engage the lug 39. Shoulders 8 and 9 forming 25 the inner ends of slots 38 and 40 respectively serve as stops adapted to be engaged by lugs 31 and 39 respectively to limit movement of the latch bolt 20. A latch bolt actuating member 43 is fixed to the latch bolt 20 and projects through a slot 44 30 in the door l2 to a point outside the door.
A look is provided which may be automatically operable to lock the latch bolt 20 in its locking position when the latch bolt 20 is moved into its locking position. A suitable arrangement for this purpose may comprise a detent 50 slidably mounted in a vertical passage 5| and adapted to engage a recess 52 in the top edge of the latch bolt 20 when the latter is in its locking position. A pin 53-carried by the detent 50 extends through a slot 54 in the casing l 5 and into a slot 55 within an arm 56 pivotally carried by a stud 5! fixed in the casing IS. The arm 56 is provided with a depending cam follower 58 extending through a slot 59 in the casing l5 and into a cam groove 60 formed in the top edge of the bolt 2|.
In Figs. 1 and 4 the latch bolt 20 and bolt 2| are shown positioned in their locking positions in the chambers 28 and 29. If the bolt actuating member 30 is moved to the right, as viewed in Fig. 4 it will move relative to the bolt 2| until brought into engagement with the shoulder 34, as shown in Fig. 5. Further limited movement of the member 3|] to the right will cause the bolt 2| to be moved from its locked position, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, to its unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 6, leaving the latch bolt 20 in its locked position. Further movement of the member to the right will cause the cam groove 60 to actuate the cam follower 58 and swing the arm 56. This movement of the arm 56 will raise the pin 53 and consequently move the detent 50 out of the recess 52 in the top edge of the latch bolt 20. Consequently further movement .of the member 30 to the right will cause the shoulder 42 on the bolt 2| to engage the lug 39 upon the latch bolt 20 and move the latch bolt from its locked position as shown in Figs. 4 to 6 to its unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 7.
If it is desired to move the bolt 2| to its locked position when both the bolt and latch are in their unlocked positions, as shown in Fig. '7, the actuating member 30 is moved to the left to bring the member 30 in engagement with the shoulder 33 and thereafter cause the bolt 2| to move to ,the left from the position shown in Fig. 7 to the position shown in Fig. 4. In so doing the projection 36 upon the inner end of the member 30 engages the lug 31 and causes the latch bolt 20 to be moved from its unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 7, to its locked position as shown in Fig. 4.
If the bolt 2| and the latch bolt 20 are in their unlocked positions and it is desired to move the latch bolt 20 to its locked position from the opposite side of the door, the latch actuating member 43 is moved to the left, as viewed in Fig. 7, thuscausing the latch bolt 20 to move into its locked position in the chamber 28, as viewed in Fig. 6. In so doing the lug 31 moves freely in the ,slot 38 in the partition I1 and at the same time the lug 39 moves in the slot 40 until it engages the stop 9 thus preventing the bolt 2| being moved from its unlocked position into its locked position. If, on the other hand, the latch bolt 20 is in its locked position and the bolt 2| in its unlocked position as shown in Fig. 10 movement of the latch bolt actuating member 43 to the right .is prevented by engagement of the detent 50 in the recess 52 in the top edge of the latch bolt 20.
'I-Iowever, if the bolt 2| is positioned, as shown in Figs. 4 or 11 the detent 50 will be held out of engagement with the recess 52 and consequently movement of the latch bolt actuating member 43 to the right from the position shown in Fig. 4 will cause the latch bolt 20 to be moved out of its locked position, as shown in Fig. 4, to its unlocked position as shown in Fig. '7. Thus, it will be noted that when the bolt 2| is positioned as shown in Fig. 11 the latch bolt 20 may be moved freely between its locked position and its unlocked position without moving the bolt 2|.
I claim:
1. In a bolt mechanism for a movable closure, the combination of a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their latching positions, means for dogging said latch bolt in its latching position as said latch bolt is moved into its latching position, and means controlled by said bolt for controlling said dogging means and for moving said latch bolt out of its latching position.
2. In a bolt mechanism for a movable closure, the combination of a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their latching positions, means for dogging said latch bolt in its latching position as said latch bolt is moved into its latching position, and means responsive to movement of said bolt for retracting said dogging means and for moving said latch bolt out of its latching position.
3. In a bolt mechanism for a movable closure, the combination of a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their latching positions, means providing a one-way driving connection between said bolt and said latch bolt as said bolt is moved into its latching position, means for dogging said latch bolt in its latching position as said latch bolt is moved into its latching position, and means controlled by said bolt for controlling said dogging means.
4. In a bolt mechanism for a movable closure, the combination of a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their latching position, means providing a one-way driving connection between said bolt and said latch bolt as said bolt is moved into its latching position, means for dogging said latch bolt in its latching position as said latch bolt is moved into its latching position, and means responsive to movement of said bolt for retracting said dogging means.
5. In a bolt mechanism for a movable closure, the combination of a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their latching positions, means providing a one-way driving connection between said bolt and said latch bolt as said bolt is moved into its latching position, means for dogging said latch bolt in its latching position as said latch bolt is moved into its latching position, and means controlled by said bolt for controlling said dogging means and for moving said latch bolt out of its latching position.
6. In a bolt mechanism for a movable closure, the combination of a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their latching positions, means providing a one-way driving connection between said bolt and said latch bolt as said bolt is moved into its latching position, means for dogging said latch bolt in its latching position as said latch bolt is moved into its latching position, and means responsive to movement of said bolt for retracting said dogging means and for moving said latch bolt out of its latching position.
