This invention relates to fasteners for closures and more particularly to a combined bolt and latch for a closure, such as a door. It is an object of the present invention to provide a combined bolt and latch arrangement such that when the latch-is moved to its locked position from one side of the closure, such as the inside of a door, the bolt is moved automatically into its locked position and such that the latch may be moved into and out of its locked position from the other side of the closure without moving the bolt into or out of its locked position. The arrangement also is such that the latch may be moved out of its locked position by movement of the bolt after the bolt has been moved out of its locked position.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawing: in which,
Fig. l is a front elevational view of a combined bolt and latch arrangement embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken upon the line 44 of Fig. 1; and
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views similar to Fig. 4 illustrating different positions of the various parts.
Before explaining in detail the present invention it is to be understod that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation, and it is not intended to limit the invention claimed herein beyond the requirements of the prior art.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and comprises a door casing I0 having a doorway H in which a door I2 is movably mounted. A hollow casing I5 is secured upon the inside surface of the door |2 by screws l6 and is divided by a partition into chambers l8 and I9 adapted to slidably receive respectively a latch bolt 20 and a bolt 2|. A hollow casing 25 is secured upon the edge of the door casing ID by screws 26 and is positioned adjacent to the end of the casing l5 and in alinement therewith. The casing 25 is divided by a partition 21 into chambers 28 and 29 adapted to receive the latch bolt 20 and bolt 2| respectively when they have been moved into their locked positions.
A bolt actuating member 30 is slidably mounted in a slot 3| in the bolt 2| and projects through a slot 32 in the casing IS. The actuating member 30 is adapted to engage the abutments 33 and 34 formed by the end of the slot 3| to permit the bolt to be moved into or out of its locked position by movement of the actuating member 30. The inner end of the member 30 is provided with a projection 36 extending in the longitudinal direction of the bolt and toward the casing 25. A lug 3! projects from the latch bolt 29 through a slot 38 in the partition I! into the path of the projection 36. A lug 39 projects from the latch bolt 29 through a slot 40 in the partition I l and into a groove 4| in the bolt 2|. A shoulder 42 forming the inner end of the groove 4| is adapted to engage the lug 39. Shoulders 8 and 9 forming the inner ends of slots 38 and 40 respectively serve as stops adapted to be engaged by lugs 31 and 39 respectively to limit movement of the latch bolt 20. A latch actuating member 43 is fixed to the latch bolt 20 and projects through a slot 44 in the door I 2 to a point outside the door.
In Figs. 1 and 4 the latch bolt 20 and bolt 2| are shown positioned in their locked positions in the chambers 28 and 29. If the bolt actuating member 30 is moved to the right, as viewed in Fig. 4, it will move relative to the bolt 2| until brought into engagement with the shoulder 34, as shown in Fig. 5. Further limited movement of the member 30 to the right will cause the bolt 2| to be moved from its locked position, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, to its unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 6, leaving the latch bolt 20 in its locked position. Still further movement of the member 30 to the right will cause the shoulder 42 on the bolt to engage the lug 39 upon the latch bolt 20 and move the latch bolt from its locked position, as shown in Figs. 4 to 6 to its unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 7.
If it is desired to move the bolt 2| to its locked position when both the bolt and latch bolt are in their unlocked positions, as shown in Fig. '7, the actuating member 30 is moved to the left to bring the member 30 in engagement with the shoulder 33 and thereafter cause the bolt 2| to move to the left from the position shown in Fig. '7 to the position shown in Fig. 4. In so doing the projection 36 upon the inner end of the member 30 engages the lug 3'! and causes the latch bolt 20 2 to be moved from its unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 7, to its locked position as shown in Fig. 4.
If the bolt 2| and the latch bolt 20 are in their unlocked position and it is desired to move the latch bolt 20 to its locked position from the opposite side of the door, the latch actuating member 43 is moved to the left, as viewed in Fig. 7, thus causing the latch bolt 20 to move into its locked position in the chamber 28, as viewed in Fig. 6. In so doing the lug 31 moves freely in the slot 38 in the partition l1 and at the same time the lug 39 moves in the slot 48 until it engages the stop 9 thus preventing the bolt 2| being moved from its unlocked position into its locked position. If, on the other hand, both the latch bolt 20 and the bolt 2| are in their locked positions as shown in Fig. 4 movement of the latch actuating member 43 to the right will cause the latch bolt 20 to be moved out of its locked position, as shown in Fig. 4, to its unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 7. During this movement, lug 3'! first engages the projection 36 to cause the latter to move in the slot 3| from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 5, movement of the bolt 2| out of its locked position being prevented by engagement of the lug 31 with the stop 8. It will be noted that the latch bolt 20 may be moved freely between its locked posit-ion, as shown in full line in Fig. 5, and its unlocked position, as shown in dotted line in Fig. 5, without moving the bolt 2|.
I claim:
1. In combination with a movable closure, a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their locked positions, means providing a one-way driving connection between said bolt and latch bolt as said bolt is moved into its locked position, means operative in response to movement of said bolt after said bolt is moved out of its locked position for moving said latch bolt out of its locked position, an actuating member for moving said latch bolt into and out of its locked position and means for preventing movement of said bolt into its locked position as said latch bolt is moved by said actuating member into its locked position.
2. In combination with a movable closure, a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their locked positions, actuating members operable from opposite sides of said closure for moving said bolt and latch bolt, and means operative to cause said latch bolt to move into its locked position when said bolt is moved into its locked position by said bolt actuating member and inoperative for moving said bolt when said latch bolt is moved out of its locked position by said latch actuating member.
3. In combination with a movable closure, a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their locked positions, means operable from one side of said closure for moving said latch bolt into and out of its locked position and operable from the other side of said closure for moving said bolt and latch bolt simultaneously into their locked positions including an actuating member movably mounted on said bolt for limited movement relative thereto, and a member fixed upon said latch bolt adapted to cooperate with said actuating member.
4. In combination with a movable closure, a latch bolt and a bolt mounted for movement into and out of their locked positions, and means operable from one side of said closure for moving said latch bolt into and out of its operative position and operable from the other side of said closure for moving said bolt and latch bolt simultaneously into their locked positions and operable from said other side for moving said bolt out of its locked position and for thereafter moving said latch bolt out of its locked position including a pair of spaced members fixed upon said latch bolt and an actuating member movably mounted on said bolt for limited movement relative thereto and adapted to cooperate with one of said spaced members.
