Application To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jor-ran LINDBERG, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Paris, France, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks (tor which I have filed an application in Sweden May 29, 1920), of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improvement in seltlockingr loelts provided with beveled latch-bolt and with a boltactuating arm or the like which is rotatable in the lock and serves for retracting the latch-bole for opening the lock, and which latch-bolt and bolt-actuating arm are adapted to cooperate in such manner that after the lock has been opened the latch-bolt is retained by said arm in such intermediate po sition between its maximum extended position and its maximum retracted position that only the bevel of the bolt projects outside the look casing, and that after the latchbolt has been pushed from such intermediate position back into the lock casing; by col VAnom mn operation with the door-post or the like it is released from engagement with said boltactuating arm and is free to be moved by its spring outwards to its maximum extended or locking position. The invention consists principally in that the latch-bolt and the bolt-actuating arm are so arranged that during the entire movement of the latch bolt from its maximum retracted position within the lock casino; to the said intermediate position in which only its beveled portion projects outside the lock casing: the said parts, namely, the latch-bolt and the bolt-actuating arm are in positive engagement with one another for the purpose that after the lock has been opened the latch-bolt 4 shall be securely stopped by the bolt-actuating arm in the said intermediate position. According: to a suitable embodiment ot the present improvement one of the parts either the latch-bolt or the bolt-actuating armis provided with a projection which is guided in a slot or groove in the other part in such manner that the projection can not become released from said slot or groove until the holt-aetuating arm and thelatoh-bolt filed. An embodiment of a lock constructed in accordance with the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. Fig. 1 shows a side view of the lock, one of the side plates of the lock casing being removed, and the ditlerent parts occupying positions corresponding); to the latch-bolt being in its maximum extended position, the lock thus being: lOChOd. Fig". 2 is side view showing the parts in the positions occupied when the latch-bolt is tully retracted within the lock casing the lock thus being opened. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in the positions occupied when only the beveled portion of the bolt projects outside the lock casing. The latch-bolt 1, which is beveled on one side" moves in the usual manner in corresponding opening; in the end plate 2 of the lock casing: In the embodiment illustrated the latch-bolt i! is provided with a rod 4i having head said rod l beino placed in recesses provided for the same in fiann es or shoulders 6 and 7 on a plate 8 in such manner that the latch-bolt 1 bears against the outer tace ot the flange 6 and the head 5 bears against the flange 7, as illustrated in the drawing. The latch-bolt 1 and the plate 8 will thus move in unison. The plate 8 is provided with other flanges or projections 9 having apertures traversed by a rod 10 which is inserted through an aperture in one end of the lock casing); and into the apertured lugs 11 in the casing, to which lugs 11 said rod 10 is secured in suit able manner. The rod 10 thus terms a guide for the plate 8. Between one of the flanges 9 of the plate 8 and one of the lugs 11 in the casing there is inserted a spring 12 which tends to move the plate 8 outwards and thus to move the latchbolt 1 out of the casing.
A bolt-actuating arm 13 is rotatably journalled in the casing- 3 and is actuated. by a spring 14 which tends to turn said arm 13 in eloclewise direction in. the drawing.- Said arm 13 is adapted to be actuated from outside the look by means of a key or handle in any suitable well-known manner. For open ing the lock the arm 13 is turned to the lett or in counter-clockwise direction in the drawing against the action oil"? the spring 1 1. When the lock is locked and the latch-bolt 1 occupies its maximum extended positron, as illustrated in Fig. 1, a stud or pro ection 15 on the arm 13 is in alongitudinal slot 16 in the plate 8. During said counter-clockwise turning of the arm 13 said stud 17 will strike against the rear end of said slot which forms a stop or abutment 1? for the stud 15. The said turning of the arm 13 will thus obviously result in the plate 8 and thus a so the latch-bolt 1 being moved inwards in the lock casing 3 while compressing the spring 12. \Vhen the arm 13 has been turned through a certain angle the stud 15 will more out of engagement with the abutment 17 and drop into the transverse slot or groove 18 in the plate 8. During the continued turning of the arm 13 the stud 15 will engage the edge 19 of said slot 18 and move downwards in said slot, until the latch bolt 1 has become fully retracted within the lock and the parts have arrived in the positions shown in Fig. 2. The lock is now opened.
It the key or handle by means of which the arm 13 is actuated, is now released the spring12 will of course push the plate 8 and the latch-bolt 1 outwards, and the spring la'will turn the arm 13 in clock-wise direction. During the first period of the movements of these parts the stud 15 will of course move between the edges 19 and 20 of the slot 18 upwards in said slot, until the stud 15 strikes the upper edge or border 21 of said slot, which edge 21 "forms an abutment for the stud 15 with which said stud engages. The plate 3 with the .i-bolt .1 and the arm 13 will theretore stop in the positions shown in Fig. 3, in which the stud 15 bears against the edge 21 and the edge 19. The parts are so dimensioned that in this position only the beveled portion of the latch-bolt 1 projects outside the lock. Vi ith the parts in this position it is therefore possible to slam shut the door, drawer or lid into which or in which the lock is secured. The purpose of the slot 18 is to ensure that during the said outward movement of the parts the stud 15 shall be sure to engage the abutn'ient 21. 1f the forward edge the slot 18 did not guide the stud 15'to move upwards against the said abutment 21, and
the spring 14 was very stiff it might happen that when the key or handle is released, the arm 13 is turned so rapidly by its spring 1 1 that it moves the stud 15 out ofengagement with the edge 19. and past the abutment 21 out into the longitudinal slot 16 approximately tothe position shown in F 1, whereby the plate 8 and the latch-bolt 1 would also be free to resume. actuated by the spring 12, the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the latchbolt 1 projects fully outside the casing. It would then be impossible to push the door or drawer shut.
lVhen the parts of the lock occupy the positions shown in Fi 3, and the door or drawer is pushed shut, owing to the en ment of the beveled portion of the latch-l all 1 with the door-post or the like the latchbolt will be pushed back into the lock casi g together with the plate 8, which compresses the spring 12. During this movement of the plate 8 the abutment or edge 21 will of course slide in its own direction away from the stud 15 which becomes released, after which the arm 13 will be turned by its spring 1 1 outwards approximately to the position shown in Fig. 1'. hen the door has been shut there is thus no longer any thing to prevent the plate 8 and the latchbolt 1 from being moved outwards by the spring 12 until said parts resume the positions shown in Fig. 1, in which the flanges 9 on the plate 8 bear against the lugs 11 in the lock casing. The described clock turning movement of the arm 13 is lim ev by a stud 22 which is secured in the lock. casing and projects through a slot 23 in the arm 13 and also passes through a slot 21- in the plate 8, the ends of said slot 2A- scrvirby engaging said stud 22 to limit the nu ments of the plate 8 andthe latch-bolt 1 both directions.
The parts have now resumed the positions shown in 1. The latch-bolt 1 is secured against being forced from the outside inwards into the lock by a lug 25 on the plate 8 being located opposite a portion 26 ot the arm 13. If an attempt is made to open the lock by forcing the latch-bolt inwards, the lug 25 and the point of engagement between said two parts being somewhat below the axis of rotation 01 the arm 13 in Fig. 1, the engages ment of said two parts will only tend to turn the arm 13 to the right in Fig. 1, which turning movement is prevented, however, by the stud 22. In this manner the latch-bolt is thus securely prevented from being forced inwards in the lock. As shown in Fig. 1 there is a sufiicient play between the stud 15 on the arm 13 and the abutment 17 on the plate 8 for enabling said arm 13 to be turned, when the lock is being opened by means of its key or handle, through such an angle that the portion 26 is raised above the lug 25 before the stud 15 engages the abutment 17 and the plate 8 and the latch-bolt 1 begin their inward movement. I
In the embodiment illustrated, which represents a door lock, it is possible further to secure the latch-bolt against being forced will be forced against the portion 26, V
inwards and also to prevent the lock from. being opened from the outside with a key, by means of the catch 27 which may be moved by means of a catch knob 28 secured lo the catch and projecting on the outside oi the lock. The neck '29 of said knob is movable in a slot 80 in the lock casing which slot is provided with two recesses and an intermediate projection, as shown in Fig. i. The catch 2? is pressed against the lock casing by means of a spring 32 inserted be tween the catch and the head of a stud 31 secured to the lock casing, so that the neck 29 will thus be pressed into one of the re cesses in the slot 30. Nhen the catch 27 is moved upwards by means of the knob 28 the neck 29 slides over the projection in the slot 30 into the upper recess in Fig. t, so that the catch 27 arrives in the position shown with dotted and dashed lines in Fi 1, and the catch will thus be positioned behind the head 5 of the rod 4:, and will prevent the latch-bolt 1 from moving inwards in the look, so that the lock can not be opened by means of its key or handle, nor by applying pressure to the latch-bolt from the outside. As shown with dotted and dashed lines in Fig. 2, it is also possible by means of the catch 27 to secure the latch bolt in its maximum retracted position within the lock, which will thus remain opened.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described and illustrated in the drawing. It is not necessary, for instance, that the latch-bolt be loose and removable from the plate 8, as these two parts may be made integral, although the construction described is particularly suitable in respect of door locks for making such locks easily adaptable for doors opening outwards or for doors opening inwards. In the embodiment illustrated the arm 13 is intended to be actuated in similar manner as in the well known cylinder looks, but said arm may of course be actuated in any other suitable manner, particularly when the lock is intended for drawers cabinets or the like.
I claim: I
1. A lock of the type described comprising a bolt capable of assuming a maximum retracted, intermediate and a maximum extended position, a bolt-actuating arm coopcrating with said bolt to retract the same and to retain said bolt in a position intermediate its maximum retracted position and its maximum extended position, and means for retaining said arm in positive engagement with said. bolt to insure synchronous .movement of said members during the movement of said bolt from its maximum retracted position to said intermediate position.
2. A look of the type described comprising a bolt capable of assuming a maximum retracted, intermediate and a maximum extended position, a bolt-actuating arm cooperating with. said bolt to retract the same and to retain. said bolt in a position intermediate its maximum retracted position. and its maximum extended position, a stud on one of said parts, and a guide slot -for said stud in the other of said parts, said guide slot being adapted to retain and guide said stud during the movement of said bolt from its maximum retracted position to said intermediate position.
3. A look of the type described comprising a casing, a bolt capable of assuming a maximum retracted, intermediate and a maximum extended position and slidable longitudinally in said casing said bolt having a transverse slot and an abutment at one end of said slot, a rotatable bolt-actu ating arm in said casing adapted to cooperate with said bolt to retract the same within said casing, and a stud on said arm adapted to be guided and retained in said slot during the outward movement of said bolt from its maximum retracted position and by engagement with said abutment to retain said bolt in a position intermediate its maximum retracted position and its maximum extended position.

A look of the type described comprising a casing, a bolt capable of assuming a maximum retracted, intermediate and a maximum extended position and slidable longitudinally in said casing, said bolt having a transverse slot and an abutment at one end of said slot, a rotatable bolt-actuating arm in said casing adapted to cooperate with said bolt to retract the same within said casing, a stud on said arm adapted to be guided and retained in said slot during the outward movement of said bolt from its maximum retracted position and by engagement with said abutment to retain said bolt in a position intermediate its maximum retracted position and its maximum extended position, a lug on said bolt, and a projection on said arm adapted to occupy a position in the path of said lug when the bolt is in its maximum extended, position.
5. A lock of the type described comprising a casing, a bolt capable of assuming a maximum retracted, intermediate and a maximum extended position and slidable longitudinally in said casing, said bolt having a transverse slot and an abutment at one end of said slot, a guide rod for said bolt, a rotatable bolt-actuating arm in said casing adapted to cooperate with said bolt to retract the same within said casing, a stud on said arm adapted to be guided and retained in said slot during the outward movement of said bolt from its maximum retracted position and by engagement with.
said abutment to retain said bolt in a position intermediateits maximum retracted position and its maximum extended position a lug on said bolt, and a projection on said arm adapted to occupy a position in the path of said lug when the bolt is in its maximum extended position.

A look of the type described comprising a bolt capable of assuming a maxin'ium retracted, an intermediate and a maximum 10 extended position, an arm, one of said members having a slot, the other of said members having a stud guided by said slot muing the movement of said boit from m; mum retracted position to the inte-i'medi position and adapted to retain said boit in said last named position.
