10 Claim'. (CL 12S-177) construction, ease of operation and compactness` of design. The invention consists in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of the fluid cooled cylinder of an internal combustion engine embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2--2 in Fig. l,
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. with the valve in position to permit iiow of the cooling uid to and around the injection nozzle; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the valve in position to prevent the now of the cooling fluid to said nozzle.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown in connection with an internal combustion engine of the Diesel type, the upper portion only of a cylinder being shown. Said cylinder comprises inner and outer walls l and 2, respectively, that are spaced apart to form a chamber or jacket l therebetween adapted to contain water or other suitable cooling medium. The inner and outer walls of the cylinder head have alined openings I and 6, respectively, extending therethrough; and said walls are connected by a cylindrical wall or web 1, which is disposed concentric to said openings and forms a chamber 8 in the cooling chamber I. The wall I of the smaller chamber I is provided with diametrically opposed openings 9 which permit the cooling liquid in the main cooling chamber to flow through said smaller chamber.
The cylinder is provided with a valve Il for cutting of! communication between the main cooling chamberi and the smaller chamber 8 and for permanently closing the opening 6 in the outer wall 2 of said cylinder. Said cut-ofi valve comprises a cylindrical sleeve portion Il rotatably mounted in the cylindrical chamber I and provided with diametrically opposed openings I2 adapted to be brought into and out of register with the diametrically opposed openings l in said wall oi" said chamber. 'I'he valve has a closed outerend provided with an outstanding flange I3 adapted to rest on the top of the cylinder head and is held down on said head by means of a pair of cap 5 screws I4 located one on each side of said valve. 'I'he cap screws I4 extend through arcuate slots II provided therefor in the top flange Il of the valve and have their lower ends threaded into the outer wall of the cylinder head. 'Ihe arcuate 10 slots Il are disposed concentric to the rotary axis of the valve and are of suiiicient length to permit the required oscillatory movement oi' the valve.
Fluid is injected into the combustion space 4 of the cylinder by means of a suitable injection 15 nozzle I I having an exteriorly threaded portion that is threaded into a threaded hole I'I that extends through the outerend of the valve Il in axial alinement with the hole 5 in the inner wail I of the cylinder head. The body portion of 20 said nozzle extends through the valve sleeve II centrally thereof with its inner or discharge end Il tapered to cooperate with a tapered seat I9 provided therefor in the outer end of the opening 5 which extends through the inner wall of the 25 cylinder and opens into the compression space 4 thereof.
By the arrangement described. the beveled discharge end Il of the fuel injector or nozzle I6 is forced tightly against the beveled seat I9 pro- 30 vided therefor in the opening 5 leading into the combustion space 2|l\of the cylinder by rotating the injector in the threaded opening Il provided therefor in the outer end of the rotary valve I0 which controls the flow of the cooling fluid to and around the said nozzle. When it is desired to remove the injection nozzle, the clamp screws I4 are loosened and the valve I0 rotated to bring the openings I2 therein out of register with the openings 9 in the cylindrical wall or valve seat 1, there- 40 and a valve surrounding said injector for sepa- 5o rating the same from said chamber.
2. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder having a chamber adapted to contain a cooling fluid, a fuel injector extending through said chamber into said cylinder, and means for cut- 5g ting off the flow of the uid in said chamber to said fuel injector.
3. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder having a chamber containing a cooling iiuid, a fuel injector extending through said chamber into said'cylinder, and a valve for controlling the ow of the fluid in said chamber to said'fuel injector. Y,
4. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder having a cooling chamber, a fuel injector extending into said cylinder through said chamber, and a valve surrounding said fuel injector and n adapted to separate the same from said chamber,
said valve constituting a support for said -fuel injector.
5. In an internal combustion engine, a. cylinder having a cooling chamber, a fuel injector ex- Y tending into said cylinder through said chamber,
a valve surrounding said fuel injector and adapted to separate the same from said chamber, said valve constituting a support for said fuel injector, Aand means for securing said valve `to said cylinder, said means permitting limited rotary movement of said valve.
6. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder havingv a main cooling chamber and a valve chamber communicating with said main cooling -with its inner end in communication with the combustion space of said cylinder. 8. In an Vinternal combustion engine, a cylinder having a main cooling chamber and a cylindrical valvechamber communicating with said main cooling chamber, a hollow cylindrical valve` f ange, provided 4with arcuate openings; and fasteners extending through said openings into said cylinder.
9. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder having spaced inner and outer walls forming a main cooling chamber therebetween said walls having alined openings extending therethrough and being connected around said openings by a wall forming a cylindrical chamber, communicating with said main chamber, a valve having a portion closing the opening in the outer wall .of said cylinder and a hollow cylindrical portion rotatable in said cylindrical chamber Vfor `controlling communication between said chambers, and a fuel injector removably supported in an opening provided therefor in'said valve with its discharge end in register with the openingfin the inner wall'of said cylinder.
10. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder having spaced inner and outer walls forming a main cooling chamber therebetween said walls having alined openings extending therethrough and being connected around said openings by a wall forming a cylindrical chamber communicating with said main chamber, a valve'having a portion closing the opening in the outer wall of said cylinder and a hollow cylindrical portion rotatable in said cylindrical chamber for controllingcommunication between said chambers, and a fuel injector removably supported in an opening provided therefor in said valve with its discharge end in register with the opening in the inner wall of said cylinder, the cooperating portions of said innerwall opening and the discharge end of said fuel injector being beveled.
