Application filed. October 4, 1930. Serial No. 486,328.
I This invention relates to liquid dispensers and particularly to faucets or valves and drinking fountains.
. One object of this invention is to provide a combined faucet and drinking fountain together with an improved unitary means for mounting the same and supplying with liquid either one or both, as desired.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a drinking fountain having an improved valve arrangement and control, which is simple and compact.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combinedliquid supply pipe and valve, with an improved valve seat arrangement in the pipe and forming a part ofa multiple flow passage structure.
A further object of the invention is to furnish a combination faucet and drinking foun- "giqi tain having relatively few and simple parts co-ordinated in an improved manner, and which is compact, and inexpensive to manufacture, easy to operate, reliable, and eflicient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds. a
With the aforesaid objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combinations "30 and arrangements of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, and illustrated on the annexed drawing.
In the drawing is shown a view in vertical 35 section of a device embodying the invention.
' ent constructions; The accompanying drawing, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred ex-emplification of the invention.
It will be understood that this invention is 9 applicable to liquid dispensers generally having a plurality of connections or outlets one or both of which are to be operated simule taneously, and that the terms faucet and drinking fountain are-to be considered merely in an illustrative sense, and as exemplifying 55 the broad invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10, denotes a combination faucet and drinking fountain embodying the invention. The same includes a supply pipe 11 for water or other on liquid. Formed in a portion of said pipe is a transverse longitudinally extending wall 12 dividing the pipe intoa plurality of passages 13 and 14. Of these the passage 13 may be somewhat larger.- The. wall 12 is connect- 05 ed to the wall of the pipe at 15. At one end of the pipe may be a suitable branch outlet or faucet nozzle 16 communicating .with the passage 1a. The faucet nozzle may be of any desired shape or construction and so arranged that hose connections may be made therewith. The other end of the pipe 11 is adapted to be connected to any suitable coupling or liquid supply means 17.
.A faucet valve 18 coacts with the nozzle 16, and a drinking fountain 19 is arranged to communicate with one of said passages, so that water may be supplied either to the fancet nozzle or to the drinking fountain as may be desired. Various possible arrangements may be employed for this purpose, but I desire to provide a neat appearing and compact fixture which is convenient to operate. Accordingly, the faucet valve is preferably positioned with the stem 20 thereof in vertically extending position and the handle 21 above the pipe 11. For the same reasons, the drinking fountain is preferably arranged at anend of the pipe 11, adjacent to the faucet nozzle, and with the cup 22 opening upward and the push button 23 that operates a valve 24 controlling the fiow of water to thecup, and positioned in alinement with said supply pipe and in forward extending relation therefrom.
The passage 13 is closed at its end in any suitable manner or by the valve 24. Formed in the dividing wall 12 is a valve seat 25 around an opening 26. To close saidopening,
"any well known valve 27 may be provided adapted to register with said seat. This valve into the tubular portion is a bushing 33, or the like, having a head 34 whereby the same may be turned by a wrench. The bushing may have an upper threaded male portion see that is adapted to receive a gland Formed in said bushing is a central opening 36', the lower portion of which has threaded engagement at 37 with the stem. A cap 38 may be screwed onto the portion 34% so as to'bear down on the gland and make the stem fluid tight.
7 When the valve 18 is closed,no liquid may flow from the passage 13 into the passage 14. But when the valve is open, liqnid is free to flow through the valve opening 26 into the passage 14 and thence to the faucet nozzle 16.
The valve structure 24 may include a cylindrical casing portion 39 connected to but preferably integral with the supply pipe 11, and formed as an extension of the passage 13. The said casing portion may have a th eadcd part 40 into which a sleeve 41 provi ring a valve seat 42 is screwed. This sleeve 41 may have a head or other engagement portion 43 whereby the same is screwed into position, through an opening 44 which may be closer by a nut 45. Extending through the sleeve is a stem 46 one end of which carries a valve 47, while the other end extends snu y through an opening in the nut 45. To retain the valve in closed position, an expansion coil spring 48 takes around the stem and bears at one end against a shoulder 49 fixed the stem, and at its other end against a we ier 5O resting against an end of sleeve 41. in erposed between the spring and-the shoulde may be a leather cup 52 for assuring a liquid tight connection, said leather cup moving along and in snug contact with the wall of a bore 53 in the nut 45.
Formed in the wall of th sleeve 41 m'a be one or more holes 54, one of which is adapted to communicate with an opening 55 of a branch connection 56, and to which connection the fountain cup 22 is threaded'y connected.
When the valve 47 is closed, flow of is cut 05 to the drinking fountain or parts forward of said valve. On press button 23, the valve is opened, bu the I 47 and the stem 46 permit only a re 'ric flow of water to the drinking fountain under a requisite reduced pressure. pressure is sufficiently low to prevent-leakage about the stem 46 without the employn ent of That reduced.
any gland, although it will be understood that the same may be used in the conventional manner if desired.
It will now be understood that either the faucet or the drinking fountain or both may be'operated as may be convenient.
The supply pipe 11 may be made in any suitable manner, for instance, as a casting. It may assume various sizes and shapes and may also be denominated as a liquid container.
It willbe appreciated that various changes and modifications may be made in the device as shown in the drawing, and that the same is submitted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the invention being defined in the following claims.
