Description
Oct. 19, 1937. J. v. STROUGH 2,096,311
HINGE Filed Oct. 27, 1956 By imm- Maw am.
Attorneys- Patented Oct. 19, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to hardware and more particularly to hinges.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved ball and socket type .of hinge having a wide range of adjustment and also equipped to facilitate'lubricating the hinge.
The invention, together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
. Figure 1 is a plan view of the hinge with parts broken away and shown in section, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, it will be seen that the hinge comprises a-pair of hinge plates 5, 6, each of which is provided at one edge with an integral hinge sleeve, the sleeve for the plate being designated by the reference numeral I and the sleeve for the plate 6 being indicated by the reference numeral 8.
The pintle for the hinge includes an externally threaded pintle or hinge section 9 that is complemental to internal threads provided for the sleeve 1 whereby the pin or pintle section 9 may be secured at any desired position of adjustment axially of the sleeve I.
A cap nut II] is threaded on the upper end of the pin or pintle section 9, while at its lower end the pin or pintle section 9 is diametrically enlarged and provided with external screw threads, as at I I, and also with a substantially hemispherical socket I5.
, A socket member I3 is threaded on the enlarged end of the pin section 9 and is formed as at I4 to complement the socket I5 to cooperate withthe socket for receiving the ball head I2 provided on one end of a hinge pintle or pin section I6.
The hinge pin or pintle section I6 is threaded for screw-threaded engagement with the eccentrically disposed threaded bore ll of a bushinglike member I8 that is threaded into the sleeve 8 of the hinge plate or leaf 6. Thus it will be seen that the bushing-like member I8 may be adjusted axially of the sleeve 8 and the hinge pin or pintle section I6 adjusted axially of the bushing j nearer to or farther apart as may be found desection 9 is provided with a bore 20 through which lubricant may pass into the socket I5 and about the ball I2 to maintain the hinge at this point well lubricated to insure smooth free action of the hinge.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of a hinge structure embodying the features of the present invention will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A hinge, including a pair of leaves each provided with a sleeve, a hinge pin section associated with one of the sleeves for axial adjustment relative to the sleeve, a second hinge pin section associated with the other of the sleeves for axial adjustment relative to the last mentioned sleeve, one of said hinge pin sections having a socket provided in one end thereof and being also externally threaded at the socket equipped end, and the other of said hinge pin sections having a ball on one end thereof engaging the socket of the first mentioned hinge pin section, and a socket cap threadedly engaged with the threaded end of the first-mentioned hinge pin section for maintaining the ball in said socket, said cap being apertured to accommodate the second-mentioned hinge pin section.
2. In a hinge, a hinge leaf provided with a sleeve having a threaded bore, a hinge pin section threadedly engaged in said bore and provided at one end with a socket, a second hinge leaf provided with a sleeve having a threaded bore, a threaded bushing engaged in the bore of the second sleeve, said bushing provided with an eccentrically disposed threaded bore, a hinge pin section threadedly engaged in the bore of said bushing and provided at one end with a ball head engaging the socket of the first mentioned hinge pin section, and. an internally threaded cap threadedly engaged on the socket equipped end of the first mentioned hinge pin section and receiving the ball head for releasably retaining said head in engagement with the socket.
3. In a hinge, a pair of complemental hinge leaves each provided with an interiorly threaded sleeve, said sleeves being adapted for location in superposed relation, a pin threaded into the upper sleeve for adjustment therein and provided at its lower end with a hemispherical socket, a bushing threaded into the lower sleeve for adjustment therein, a pintle threaded into said bushing for adjustment therein and having a ball member at its upper end seating in said socket, and a retainer for said ball member threaded onto the lower end of said pin.
