HEADREST.
Application filed January 12, 1926, Serial No. 80,776. Renewed January 3, 1927.
This invention relates to head rests and is for the use of embalmers for the purpose of securing the desired elevation of the head of the cadaver and holding the same in proper position.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a head rest for the above purpose wherein the head supporting member per se may be raised or lowered while the head of the cadaver rests thereon, and without disturbing the same.
A further and important object is to provide a head rest of the before mentioned character that is relatively simple of con struction, inexpensive of manufacture, and efficient in use.
lVith the above and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout both the views:
Figure 1 is a sectional View of my improved head rest, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the head plate or cap per se.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, our novel head rest constitutes the provision of a head supporting plate or cap 5 of metal, shaped to the contour of the base of a persons head. Formed centrally upon the under side of this plate is a pair of pendent spaced ears 66 having aligned openings, one of which is threaded. For disposition between said cars is the upper flattened end 7 of a threaded bolt 9 that is secured therebetween through the medium of a suitable screw 10.
Said threaded bolt 9 has threaded engagement within the upper interiorly threaded end of a screw sleeve 11, the lower portion of the opening through which is of greater diameter than the upper interiorly threaded portion in order that a circular head 12 upon the lower end of the bolt 9 may move freely therethrough, and engage the shoulder 13 thus formed within the sleeve for limiting the upward threading movement of the bolt in said screw sleeve.
The screw sleeve 11 is threaded within a sleeve let formed around a central opening 15 in an adjusting plate 16. The upper end of the screw sleeve 11 is unthreaded as is also the upper end of the sleeve 14 for limiting the downward threaded movement of the screw sleeve 11 within the internally threaded sleeve 14 of the adjusting plate 16.
The head rest is associated with the embalming table in the usual manner, and it will be apparent that when the head of the cadaver is disposed upon the plate 5, a turning of the adjusting plate 16 in opposite directions will either raise or lower the head supporting plate without requiring the removal of the head from the plate.
It will also be seen that a turning of the member 16 in one direction will first cause the unthreading of the bolt 9 from the screw sleeve 11. As soon as the head 12 upon the end of the bolt engages the shoulder 13, the screw sleeve will be projected outwardly from the sleeve 14, and thus enable the head supporting plate 5 to be raised or lowered a distance substantially equivalent to the length of the bolt 9 and sleeve 11.
Minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit or scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a head rest of the character described, a plate formed with a central opening around which is an internally threaded sleeve, an externally threaded sleeve threaded within said first mentioned sleeve, and being internally threaded at its upper end, a bolt threaded within the upper end of the externally threaded sleeve, means for limiting the outward threaded movement of the bolt with respect to the sleeve, and a head rest carried by the upper end of the bolt.
2. In a head rest of the character described, an adjusting plate having a central opening, an internally threaded sleeve extending upwardly from the adjusting plate and surrounding the opening, an externally threaded sleeve threaded in said aforemen tioned sleeve, the upper portion of the bore of the second sleeve being reduced to form a shoulder in the intermediate portion of the bore of said sleeve, a bolt threaded through the reduced bore of. the second For limiting; the upward threaded movement sleeve and having its lower end extending ol' the holt with respect to the externally into the lower portion of mid externally threaded sleeve.
