COLLAPSIBLE CAMP STOVE r Filed Aug. 5, 1936 2 sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Oct. 12, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in collapsible camp stoves and the main object is to provide a camp stove made up of a number of fiat metal pieces so cut and formed that they 5 may be set up quickly and conveniently to form an efiicient cooking and heating stove for the camp or for emergency use in the house and in which the pieces may be collapsed and formed into a flat compact bundle for carrying and storage.
Another object is to provide a stove of this kind including a bottom having upturned marginal flanges, a back placed upright in the bottom and having forwardly turned flanges on its lateral edges, sides placed upright on the bottom inwardly of the fianges on both bottom and back, a top having flanges turned down over the sides and back and having a forwardly projecting ear on its frontal end, and a front or cover having slots any of which will engage the said ear to hold the front in place and to vary the draft, and a smoke escape means in the top.
A further object is to provide an assembly of this kind including simple and convenient means for holding the parts assembled.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as showing a preferred embodiment of my invention for purposes of exemplification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stove set up for use.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the bottom alone.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the top alone. Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the 40 sides. Y
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the back alone. g
Figure 6 is a fragmental enlarged cross section through one side portion of the stove show- 45 ing one of the lock pins in use for holding the stove assembled.
In carrying out my invention I provide first a bottom or base member of sheet metal of any suitable kind and gauge and of rectangular shape with upturned inarginal flanges ll around both sides I2 and |3 and front and rear ends l4 and l5. Two identical sides IG are provided in rectangular shape and of such size that they may be set upright on their lower edges on the bottom |0 within the fianges ll. A back I'I is provided and same is of such width as to set on edge across the rear end of the bottom l0 inwardly of the flanges I l and this back has forwardly turned fianges l8 along its vertical lateral edges which overlie the rear end of the sides IG. A top I 9 is provided of substantially the same size and shape as the bottom |0 and has downwardly turned flanges 20 along its sides 2I and 22 and rear end 23 which flanges will overhang the upper margins of the sides I 6 and back I'I. At its frontal end 24 at the center thereof the top |9 has a wide short support ear or tongue 25 forwardly projected and near its rear end 23 an aperture 26 is cut out and the margins 21 thereof split as shown at 28 so that they may be turned up to form an annular collar on which a smoke pipe (not shown) may be fitted.
A front or cover 29 is provided and same is of flat rectangular shape substantially larger than the back IT. This front has a plurality of vertically spaced and horizontally elongated slots 30 cut in its central upper portion and any one of the slots may receive the ear and support the front on the stove. A U-shaped wire handle 3| is secured by its ends 32 to the 25 front 29 near its upper margin.
The top IQ has apertures 33 spaced inward a short distance from the fianges 20 and these apertures receive lock pins 34 Which in the assembly will slip down nicely inside the upper margins of both the sides I6 and back l'l and so hold these parts from falling inwardly. Heads on the pins 34 prevent their falling through into the stove and to prevent their loss or misplacement the pins may be attached to the top 35 l9 by short cords or chains (not shown) if so desired.
When not in use the various parts of the stove all being `fiat may be collapsed and stacked in a nested compact and readily carried bundle. To 40 set the stove up the bottom l0 is simply placed on some level support and the sides IG and back IT set up, the top |9 placed thereon and the pins 34 inserted. When the fire is built in the stove the front 29 may be put in place and by using the proper one of the slots 30 to hang the front on the ear 25; an opening 36 may be left at the bottom to allow any desired draft through the stove. The sides, back, top and front of the stove are all made of sheet metal of any suitable gauge and kind. If desired lock pins may be inserted also through the back I'l to hold the sides IG from slipping inwardly at their lower edges.
While I have herein set forth a certainrpreferred embodiment of my invention, it is underturned downwardly from the top over the upper margins of the sides and back, an ear extended forwardly from the frontal end of the top, anda front having spaoed slots any of which is adapted to receive the said ear and supporttthe .front in place. i V
2. In a stove, a bottom with upstanding marginal flanges, sides set on edge on the bottom within the fiangesa back set on edge on the bottom, flanges turned forwardly from the back alongside the rear ends of the sides, a top, flanges turned downwardly from the top over the upper margins of the sides and back, an ear extended forwardly from the frontal end of the top, a front having spaced slots any of which is adapted to receive the said ear and support the front in place, the said top having a smoke pipe opening adjacent its rear end, and having apertures ,spaced inwardly from its fianged margins and lock pins adapted to be passed down through the apertures inwardly of the said upper margins of the sides and back.
