This invention relates to scraping devices for footwear and has for its object a simple inexpensive device by which lforeign material such as lmud and other objectionable substances adhering to footwear can be removed therefrom with the utmost ease and dispatch to the end that the footwear of a person about to enter a house, automobile, or the like can be thoroughly cleaned of such foreign material and thus prevent soiling the floor, rugs, or floor coverings as well as eliminating unsanitary conditions, especially in rural districts, 'resulting from carrying foreign material accumulated on the footwear,y from the stables or pastures, into the dwelling.

It is a well known fact that there are a great many forms of scraping devices for this purpose, but it is the object of this invention to construct a device in which the scraper blade may be actuated by means of levers and springs so that when the scraper blade use is not required it may be retracted from obstruction, and by the use of a simple mechanism be brought into position for use. Because of this actuating means it is self cleaning.

The special construction and arrangement of the parts of this invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing of which; Fig. l is av front plan view of the device showing scraper plate retracted. Fig. 2 taken on line 2-'2 of Fig. l is a sectional side elevation showing the arrangement of the parts. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device showing the blade retracted. Fig. 4 illustrates a sectional side elevation of the scraper plate and the tension spring. Fig. 5 shows a sectional side elevation of the scraper plate retaining member with the scraper plate removed, taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.

Throughout the drawing and description the same number is used to refer to the same part.

Considering the drawing, this invention consists of an angular piece of sheet steel I of reasonable strength, which is secured to a step or other convenient location and extended downward and at right angle thereto. On this downward portion are four overlapping members 3 as shown. In the channel of these overlapping members is movably secured a scraper plate. 2, which is retained in a vertical position by the overlapping members 3 of plate I. Secured to plate I and extending vertically and at right angles thereto is a fulcrum piece 4 in which the scraper plate actuating means 5 pivots. The inner end of actuating lever 5 is pivotly secured to the scraper plate 2 by means of a bolt Ii. Bolt 6 moves vertically in an elongated slot 'I which forms a limit movement slot. In plate 2 is a horizontal slot 8 which engages protrusion 9 of plate I so that when the scraper plate is raised it will form a locking means as shown in Fig. 2. In plate I are two horizontal holes I0 through which screws or bolts may pass, that provide means for securing the scraper device to the step or other location. In scraper plate 2 are two holes I 0A which form a means through which a screw driver can be inserted to contact screws in holes I0 in order to tighten the same into place when scraper plate is partly raised. The angular metal piece I is also provided with the screw holes II, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. After said screws have been tightened into place scraper rplate 2 is now free to be raised or lowered. The rearward extending portion of member I carries holes II providing another means for securing plate I to its location as shown in Fig. 3. The scraper plate 2 is frictionally held against plate I by means of a spring I2, a friction washer I3, a retaining washer I4 and a nut I5 on bolt 6 as clearly set forth in Fig. 4.

In the operation of this invention, the scraper plate 2 is raised so that protrusion 9 slips into slot 8, thus holding scraper plate secured in a raised position ready for use, by a downward pressure of the foot upon lever 5, as shown by the broken lines in Fig. 1.

To retract the scraper plate 2, an outward and downward pressure is applied'to the top of the scraper plate which disengages protrusion 9 from slot 8 and allows plate 2 to be readily collapsed into its original position on plate I.

Having now described this invention, I claim:-

A shoe scraper comprising in combination, a supporting plate, a scraper plate located next to and upon one side of the supporting plate, said supporting plate being provided with guiding devices wherein said scraper plate may be moved upward and downward, the said guiding devices being constructed to permit a limited movement of said scraper plate towards and from the supporting plate, a lever, a pivot pin attached to said lever and scraper plate, a coil spring borne by said pin and arranged against said supporting plate whereby said lever and scraping plate are yieldingly connected, said supporting plate having a slot for the passage and movements of said pin, said supporting plate being provided with a fulcrum piece, said piece being constructed and arranged to engage the lever and afford a fulcrum therefor, said lever extending beyond the supporting plate and being operable by foot pressure, said supporting plate having a transverse protrusion, and said scraper plate being constructed with a transverse opening and being movable by said coil spring into detachable engagement with the said protrusion to hold said scraper plate in raised position.
