Description

Sept. 14, 1937. K. NoLTE 2,093,208
' METHOD OF MAKING SHEETMETAL PlLING Filed April 5,1934
y A. 2. im f Hfomev Patented Sept. 14, 1937 'UNITED STATES METnon or Mame. SHEET METAL ruime Karl Nolte, Dortmund, Germany, assignor to. Dortmund-Hoerder Huttenverein Aktiengesellschaft, Dortmund, Germany Application April 5, 1934, Serial No. 719,181 In Germany March 16, 1931 Claims.
'Ihere is described in the United States Patent No. 1,841,779 sheet piling, in which flanged I-sections are inserted into flat piling and welded thereto. This construction was selected in order to facilitate production and at the same time to secure a more effective distribution of the metal; it has, however, the disadvantage that the section with two flanges must be inserted into the metal sheet in the longitudinal direction and then '10 welded thereto. The duplication of work and the 20 The accompanying drawing illustrates dia.
grammatically in cross-section several construc-l tions of the sheet piling wall according'to the invention.
In Figure 1 the metal sheet c advantageously of 25 iron which carries the locking or claw members a and the shoulder or flange b is welded at d to the web e of a T-section f having relatively small flanges.
A particularly simple construction is illus- 30 trated in Figure 2 in which locking parts i are provided in known manner for connecting together the sections forming the wall, as in this way the joining by rolling, of the metal sheets by the locking parts, which maybe of similar con- 35 struction, is greatly facilitated.
The sheet of iron g is provided at its ends with locking parts h, h, which parts are of similar construction, over which a locking part i is passed for connecting the adjacently disposed plates of 40 iron -before the pile-driving or ramming operation. The sheet of iron g is provided with a shortv web-like extension k which is Welded at l to the web m of a T-section, the web being provided at the other end with the heavier but relatively- 45 smaller flanges n.
According to Figure 3 the metal plate g1 is provided with two lugs o on the inner side of the plate to serve as guides for the web e of the vassembling for welding is much facilitated, as no additional means are necessary for straightening 5 up or clamping the vweb e in position,
A further known advantage is afforded by the fact that the lugs can be used for welding purposesvwhen welding'with gas or .electric welding Without the use of any additional substance, so that thus the welding operation is considerably simplified.
It will be understood that the web m (Figure 2) may be provided at its free end with a channel for receiving the extension lc.
I claim:
1. A method of producing units of sheet piling with non-uniform flanges from sheets of metal strengthened by elements of rolled section 'disposed normal to the said sheets, consisting in 20 ,rolling a sheet of metal tc the form of a thin flange forming along the lateral edges locking 'parts for the engagement of similar flanges of adjacent units, rolling a thick flange in' a single piece with a symmetrically disposed web of small thickness, and finally joining the said web to the thin flange by welding at a position intermediate the length of the said thin flange.
2. A method according to claim 1. consisting in positioning the thin flange symmetrically to the plane of the web and to the locking parts.
3. A method according to claim 1, consisting in rolling in the thin flange, an intermediate web of small depth, and welding the salid web with the web rolled with the thick flange.
4. A method according to claim 1, consisting in rolling the thin flange with a pair of laterally disposed spaced ribs and in welding the web of the thick flange between the said ribs.
. 5. A method according to claim 1, consisting in rolling the thin flange with a pair of laterally disposed' spaced ribs and in welding the web of the thick flange between the said ribs, the said ribs serving as welding material for effecting the weld to the said web.
