My invention relates to a new and improved method of connecting the edges of plates, pipe sections, particularly lock-barpipe sections, and the like. The making of reliable connections for pipe sections of the character specified has always been a source of considerable trouble when the members or parts constituting lock-bar pipes are shipped unassembled and put together in the field Under present methods, the separable parts or members have been connected by riveting or by a pressing operation. Both methods are 'diflicult to carry out in the field.
The prime object of the present invention is to provide a method of making such connections that will overcome the disadvantages heretofore encountered in practice, and one by whichthe said connections may be made quickly and with the minimum of trouble, and, further, produce a joint or connection possessing intimate Contact between materials and of a strong and durable character.
The new method is intended to be used primarily for connecting the members or parts constituting lock-bar pipes, but it may be advantageously followed in forming connections between other structural parts.
Byway of example, my method will be hereinafter described with reference to connecting the parts entering into the construction of lock-bar pipes.
My method contemplates the employment of a lock-bar of any suitable construction,
but preferably of the H-bar type, adapted to receive the adjacent edges of two pipe sections in oppositely disposed spaces or chambers thereof and the employment of a suitable metal injecting apparatus for forcing metal with considerable force into the said spaces of the lock-bar into which the Said adjacent edges have been introduced.
The metal injecting apparatus employed in carrying out my method may be one of any suitable type, preferably an apparatus ineluding means for melting the metal, atomizing means, and means for applying the metal to the assembled parts of the lockbar pipe by an air blast.

Referring to the drawings, and first to the form of Fig. 1, 5 designates a lock-bar of the H-type, sai'd bar, as illustrated, including an upper flange 6, a lower flange 7, and a web portion 8 connecting the two flanges. This construction provides two spaces or chambers 9 and 10 disposed on opposite sides of the Web and designed to receive two adjacent edges of plates or pipe sections entering into the construction of the-lock-bar pipe. 11 and 12 designate grooves formed in the respective chambers 9 and 10.
The two plate or pipe sections are designated by the numerals 13 and 14. These parts are respectively formed with upset portions a and I) designed, when the parts are assembled as shown by Fig. 1, to fit into the grooves 11 and 12.
15 designates a suitable metallic filling or binding material, introduced. into the spaces 9 and 10 and between the walls thereof and the edge portions of members 13 and 14, by
sufficient pressure to effectively join the parts together.
In the form of Fig. 2, I have shown a modified plate construction. In this form, the upset portions a and b are omitted from the plate members 13 and 14, and the H-bar is lock-bar in contact with the bottom of the groove and in spaced relation to portions ofthe sides of the groove, and in air-blasting metallic binder into said groove on opposite sides of said edge portion.
