Description
E. STANLEY. Pence-Post No.209,30a. I Patented Oct. 22,1878.
INVENTOR WITNESSES C V ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ELIJAH STANLEY, OF ALBION, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,303, dated October 22, 18 78 application filed February 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I ELIJAH STANLEY, of Albion, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure lot the drawings is a perspective view of the base of my fence-post. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, and Fig. 3 is a side view thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a metallic fence-post for wire fences, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the base of myfence-post, made substantially in the form shown, and provided on its sides with flanges a a, to form stays in the ground, so as to make it firm.
. In the upper end of the base A is formed a socl;et,b, for the insertion of the post B. This post is made flat and provided on one or both sides with a central longitudinal rib, d, for strengthening the same.
In one edge of the post.B is made a series of slots, h h, at suitable distances apart, and extending from the edge inward, as shown. At the inner end of each slot h is made a notch or short downwardly-extending slot, 1', into which the wires are admitted through the slots h.
The wires are locked in the post by means of a strip, 0, having straight slots m, with notches n at their inner ends. These slots are made to coincide with those in the post. The strip G is pivoted to one end of the post, and fastened at or near the other end by a-key or pin passed through holes 0, or other suitable means, thereby locking the wires to the post.
To prevent the wires from sagging down in the center between the fence-posts, I use two slotted strips, F F, pivoted together at one end, and fastened at the other by a key or other means, said strips resting 011 the ground and holding the wires in their slots.
When the fence is to be made only partly of wire and partly of wood, each post is at its lower end provided with a flange, H, having two series of slots, a: w, for the insertion of the ends of .the boards from the two adjacent panels. This flange H may be either cast with or attached to the post, as desired.
I lay no claim to the base A neither do I claim a metal fence-post having a flange provided with openings forthe fence wire or cable, in combination with an independent covering-plate adapted to be secured upon the said flange to close said opening or slots.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The flange H, having two series of slots, so,
in combination with the post B, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELIJAH STANLEY.
