6 Claims; (Cl. 220-61) My invention is an improvement in metallic receptacles or containers of the full removable open head type, and relates more particularly to a clamping or locking device for removably securing the heads to containers of this type in fluid tight sealed relation.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple clamping device comprising broadly a channelled band which may be contracted 10 to press portions of the receptacle and cover together in fluid tight sealed relation and simple mechanism carried by the band within its circumference for contracting the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanism for contracting the band which includes a lever fulcrumed to one end of the band at a point remote from the ends of the lever and a member connecting one end of the lever with the other end of the band.
20 A further object of the invention consists in a clamping device in which the lever and the connecting member operate in opposite directions and about a fulcrum which is located at a point for producing increased closing forces and con- 25 sequently to provide a better seal between the cover and the receptacle. In this manner the ends of the band or ring, when the ring is contracted, will be caused to movetogether simultaneously with a pulling movement on the ends 30 of the ring toward the vertical axls'of the container.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become more apparent as the following description of an embodiment thereof pro- 35 gresses, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.

My invention is particularly applicable to me- 165tallic containers or receptacles such as drums or barrels, or the like, which are provided with a circumferential bead at the open end thereof for supporting a cover and for reenforcement purposes.
Referring to the drawing in which I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention the barrel or drum is indicated at I. The upper open end of the container is formed with a circumferential bead 2. A cover 8 comprises a cupped member having a circumferential upwardly and outwardly extending flange 4, supported by the bead 2 in such a manner that the cupped portion of the cover may be telescoped for a short distance within the open end of the .channel as illustrated in Figure 2. It will be noted that a portion of the flange 4 is slightly arcuate in cross section to conform with the approximate curvature of the upper surface of the head. A packing ring 5 is interposed between the cover flange 4 and the bead 2 and may consist of an annulus of any suitable packing material, such as corkor flexible rubber tubing.
I have provided a simple means for removably securing the cover on the receptaclein fluid tight sealed relation by exerting a substantially uniform pressure on the cover and the bead in a direction substantially parallel to the vertical axis of the container.
In the present embodiment this means includes a split contractible clamping ring 5 of channelled cross section, the upper and lower flanges of the ring defining the channel being engageable respectively with the cover flange 4 and the under surface of the head 2. These flanges converge outwardly of the ring and it will thus be seen upon contracting the ring the cover flange and the bead of the receptacle will be pressed tightly against the packing 5 under a substantially vertical pressure.
The ends of the clamping band or ring 6 are provided with inwardly extending lugs or brackets I and 8 respectively which may be formed separately or welded thereto. The lug 8 is of greater length than the lug I, that is, it extends inwardly of the ring to a point considerably beyond the inner extremity of the lug An operating lever B is pivotally carried by the longer. lug 8 by means of a headed pin Ill. The link I! preferably is positioned in a plane between the respective planes of 'the lugs I and I and the plane of the lever I 'so that when the lever is pulled to the left in the flguresthe closing forces exerted through the lever and link to the lugs and consequently to the ends of the rings are-uniformly distributed without any tendency to pull the ends of the ring out of line either vertically or horizontally. It will be noted that when the lever is swung to closed position to contract the ring the movement of the link is in a right hand directionin the'flgures while the movement of the longer arm of the lever is in a substantially opposite direction, and that as the lever I approaches the full closed position the link I! is caused to move inwardly of the ring toward the pin II thus bringing the centers II, II, and II close to a dead center position. In this manner it will be observed that as the centers approach a dead center position the manual forces required to bring the lever I to its extreme position in the left of the figure will be diminished as the lever approaches that position. As shown in Figure l the lever I which constitutes an operating, handle may be retained in ring contracting position by means of a retaining lug II carried by the ring and extending inwardly and downwardly, thereof.
, The operation of the device is simple. In sealing a, cover on a receptacle the cover is flrst telescoped within the open end oi the receptacle so that the cover flange! is seated upon the packing ring [and bead 2 as shown in Figure 2. The clamping ring or band is expanded by moving the lever to a right hand position and is fitted over the covered end of the receptacle and the lever I is pulled to the left as shown in Figure 4 sufliclently to bring the channel of the ring into position so that the flanges deflning the channel engage the cover flange I and the under surface of the bead 2. When the ring is thus in the proper position for final sealing. the operator grasps the handleportion of lever I and swings w it to the extreme left hand position to fully contract the ring and thereby press the cover iiange and receptacle together in fluid tight sealed relation. To remove the cover from the receptacle this operation is reversed. 35 I have found that by extending the fulcrum of the lever inwardly of the ring to a greater distance than that of the fulcrum deflning the connection between one end of the ring I2 and the lug I, the device is easier to operate and a very 7o eflective fluid tight seal can be obtained between the cover and the receptacle. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having' a bead formed about its open end and a cover having a flange fitting over the bead, a split channelled clamping ring having portions engaging the bead and cover flange to press the same together when the ring is contracted, lugs projecting inwardly of the ring and means for contracting and expanding the ring, one of said lugs extending inwardly of the ring for a greater distance than another of said lugs, said means including a lever pivotally connected with said longer lug and extending toward and beyond said other lug, and a member pivotally connecting said other lug with the inner end of said lever.

In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having a bead formed about its open end and a cover having a flange fitting over the bead, a split channelled clamping ring having portions engaging the bead and cover flange to press the same together when the ring is contracted, lugs projecting inwardly of the ring and means for contracting and expanding the ring, said means including a lever comprising a rigid member generally S-shaped in contour and having its fulcrum located remote from the ends thereof, said lever being pivotally connected at its fulcrum with one of said lugs, and a link pivotally connecting the other of said lugs with the inner end of said lever, a portion of said lever remote from its ends being engageable with the cover flange for exerting a lateral pressure thereagainst when the ring is contracted.
