3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in split rings such as are employed in connection with receptacle closures and which Yare adapted, when contracted, tol secure the 'closures in place and when expanded to release them so that they may be removed.
One object of the inventionis to provide a ring for the purpose described which lmay be `adjusted with facility to fit receptacles of diiferent sizes.
A further object is to provide a ring which, when contracted, may be locked in such a manner as to insure against its accidental or unintentional release.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a top View of a lsteel drum having its closure secured in place by a' ring embodying the features of the invention.
Figure 2 is an 'enlargedfragmentary view and is taken along line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 are enlarged sections taken along lines 3 3, 4 4, 5 5 and 6 6, respectively, of Figure 2.
Figure 7 is a horizontal section taken along line 1 1 of Figure 2 and illustrates the positions of vthe parts when the ring is initially adjusted, as in Figure 2, to increase its diameter.
Figure 8 is a similar View showing the relation of the parts when the ring is partially contracted.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 2 illustrating the positions of the parts when. the ring is initially adjusted to decrease its diameter.
Figure 10 is a section similar to Figure 7, the ring in this instance, however, being' adjusted to the size shown in'Figure 9.
Figure 11 is a similar view showing the relation of the parts when the ring is partially contracted.
The receptacle with which the ring is illustrated, by way of example, is of the steel drum type, being suitably indicated for :the purpose -in view by a showing of the side wall I5 (Figure 3) and the annular outwardly rolled bead I6 which is formed .around the .top edge thereof. The cover is indicated at I1 and, as is conventional,
is formed with a body portion -Which lits in the open end of the receptacle and a peripheral ange I8 which overlies, and conforms generally to the shape ofthe bead I6, a gasket I9 being arranged between .the Vflange and the bead to provide a seal.
The ring, indicated at 20, is U-shaped in crosssection, is split and is contractable. The free ends thereof terminate in spaced relation and, in accordance with the invention, carry depending extensions 2l and 22 which are formed to (c1. 22o-o1) provide channels 23 and 2:1. respectively. A link 25 ispivotally connected by a pin 26 (Figure 4) to each of the walls of the channel 23, the fr ee ends of the two links being connectedby a crosspin 2l (Figure 5) to which the forked end ci a lever 28 is connected. A pin 29 (Figure 4) connects the forked end of the lever to one end of a link Sil, the other end of the link being pivotally connected to a pin 3| (Figures 2 and 6) which is mounted between the walls of the channel 24. l0Y When the lever 28 ismoved to an extended position, that is to say outwardly with respect to the center of the ring, it is operative to spread the ends of the ring to increase its diameter, thereby to enable it to 'be applied or removed 15 from the receptacle. On the other hand when the -lever is -moved toits retracted position, i. e. toward the eenterfof the ring to a position in which itis arranged under vthe bead lli-and alongside the wall I.5,'i t'is operative to contract 2D the' ring, l:it being 'apparent that when the ring is arranged over the cooperating flange and bead of `the cover ,and drum, respectively, and contracted the 'gasket .I8 will lbe compressed to seal the coverxuponthedrum. In this connection it 25 will .loe noted that the link j3il has an inwardly @Xtending'end Which is connected to the lever 28. Clearance between it and the cross-pin 2l is thus provided-when the 4lever is in its retracted position.r i
It'will Vbe noted that the links V25. are adjustable through arl-.ansie o f approximately 1.80" toene position (Figure 8) in which the cross-pin 21 is located at one side 'of the pivot pins 26 and to a second position (Figure 11) Vin which the `crosspin is locatedattire opposite side ci the pivot pins. vIlfre links, `in other words provide two positions Aof pivotal support for-the lever 28,1t. being apparent :that movement of the cross-nin to thjeLfiISt position increases'the distance -be- 40 tweenthe' ends' of the ring. and hence increases its diameter While movement. ,of the cross-pin to vthe second position decreases the distance between the ends of the ring,Y and Vhence clecreases its diameter, The-adjustments described 4l are made r,while the lever is in its extended .position.r They are yfor fthef ,purpose of initially Correctine the diameter .of the ring and enable it to be fitted to different sizes of receptacles. Ait-er such adjustments have been made the lever 28 5 is moved to its retracted position to contract the ring and thereby apply the requisite amount of pressure to the cover. v
In order to lock the lever against its accidental or unintentional release after it is moved to its retracted position for the purpose described, the side walls of the channel 23 are formed with aligned openings 32 (Figure 4) for accommodating a tapered pin 33. The openings 32 are located at one side of the pivot pins 26 and when the `links 25 are adjusted to increase the size of the through a hole 36 which is formed in the link 30 A and which is moved into alignmentwith the openings 32.
The free end of the lever 28, as best shown in Figure 2, is tubular and is adapted, when the lever is in its fully retracted position, to accommodate a rod 31. The latter is mounted for lengthwise movement at the underside of the ring in spaced guides 38 which are in the form of depending straps and provides a supplemental locking means. It insures against play of the free end of the lever and may be employed in connection with or independently of the pin 33. The wire of a seal 39 may, if desired, Ibe inserted through suitable openings in the rod at opposite sides of one of the straps 38, as illustrated, to
, prevent its accidental or unintentional withdrawal from the end of the lever.
I claim as my invention:
1. A ring for removably securing a cover upon av receptacle, said ring being split and having the adjacent ends spaced apart, a lever which is movable to a retracted position to contract said ring, the inner end of said lever terminating in a fork, a pair of parallel spaced-apart links between which the terminal portions of the branches of said fork extend, each of said links having one end pivotally connected -to one end of said ring, the other end of one of the links being pivotally connected to one of the branches of said fork and the corresponding end of the other of said links being pivotally connected to the other of said branches, a third link having' one end extending between and pivotallyconnected to the branches of said fork in spaced relation with respect to the pivotal connections of said branches with said links and the other end of said link being pivotally connectedto the other end of said ring, the connections of the branches of said fork with said pair of linksV providing a pivotal axis about which said lever is moved to contract said ring, said links being adjustable about their connections with said rst mentioned ring and to pre-locate said pivotal axis at either side of said last named connections at substantially the same distance from the common axis of the receptacle and ring, whereby the degree of contraction eiected by said lever may be varied by adjusting said pair of links to either of the positions described prior to the operation of the lever and means for locking said lever in its retracted position.

3. A ring for removably securing a cover upon a receptacle, said ring being split and having the adjacent ends'spacedapart, said ends being provided With depending portions, a lever which is movable to a retracted position below said ring to contract the latter, a link having one end pivotally connected to one of said depending portions and the other end pivotally connected to the inner end of saidlever, a second link having one end pivotally connected to said lever in spaced relation with respect to sadinner end and the other end pivotally connected to the other depending' end portion, the connection of said rst mentioned link with said lever providing a pivotal axis about which said lever is moved to contract said ring, said rst mentioned link being adjustable about its vconnection with said first mentioned depending ring portionto pre-locate said pivotal axis'at either side of said last named connection at substantially the same distance from the common axis of the receptacle and ring, whereby the degree of contraction effected by said lever may be varied by adjusting said pair of links to either of the positions 'described prior to the operation of the lever, the adjustment of said rst mentioned link in the manner 'described providing two diierent circumferential positions of retraction of said lever and means for locking said lever in either of said positions.
