Description

Aug. 3, 1937. w. J. DENNIS SQUEEGEE Filed May 17, 1954 wif/2655.'

2,088,711 SQUEEGEE William J. Dennis, chicago, 111. Application May 17, 1934, Serial No. 726,082 c claims.. (c1. -245)` This invention relates to squeegees, and par` ticularly to portable hand operated devices adapted for use on windows, floors, walls, etc.
In the use of squeegees of the character described, it is the customary practice, after wiping a section of window or the like, to wipe off the edge of the blade or wiping element and adjacent portions of the holder with a sponge, rcham ois or the like, and frequently, portions of the securing means employed for securing the wiping element to the holder protrude beyond the body of the holder, thus, causing damage by slitting and tearing of the sponge or chamois.
One object of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a device of the character described wherein the exposed ends or rough portions of the securing means are covered to pre# vent contact therewith of a sponge, chamois or the like, employed for wiping the squeegee.
Another object of the invention is to provide a squeegee wherein the wiping element is removable `and may be readily replaced with another, which may be conveniently secured to the holder by screws, and wherein any exposed ends of the ,screw-threaded portions 'of the screws are covered to protect a sponge, chamois or the like, from damage by contact therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide a squeegee of the character described wherein the coveringor protecting means is formed integrally with the holder.
Another object oiy the invention is to provide a squeegee wherein the wiping element holder thereof is so constructed as to resist lateral effects tending to distort the holder and wiping element from its straight line position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a squeegee wherein the clamping member for the wiping element and the covering or protecting means are formed integrally with the holder.
A still further object of the invention is to improve devices of the character described in sundry details hereinafter referred to and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Illustrative embodiments of the present invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a perspective view of an improved squegee embodying features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation taken substantially as indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view oi a modito form a clamping member fled construction embodying features of the present invention, and
Fig. 4 is a' sectional perspective view of a fur-v ther modication of the present invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the embodiment of the present invention illustrated therein comprises a channel-shaped holder inm dicated as a whole by the numeral 5 having a handle 6 secured thereto by means of screws l, or the like, and having a socket 8 formed therein adapted to receive an extension stick or bar (not shown) for extending lthe length of the handle.
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 the holder 5 is of substantially channel-shaped form having one of the wall portions 9 of the holder bent inwardly and backwardly upon itself in a manner Il) having a plurality of screw-threaded apertures II formed therein, adapted to receive threaded securing means shown in the present instance as screws I2, the heads I3 of which are adapted to engage washers I4 positioned in tapered apertures formed in the wall portion I5 of the holder, the shank portion of the screws I2 being adapted to extend through a wiping element I6 shown in the present instance as comprising a plurality of plies VIl formed of suitable material such as rubber, or the like, and by reason of the engagement of the screw-threaded shank portions of the screws I2 with the screw-threaded apertures II of the clamping member I0, means are provided for securing the wiping element I6 to the holder. It will be noted that by such an arrangement, and particularly by reason of the relative position of the wall portion 9 of the holder and the clamping member I0, the threaded end portions of the screws I2 extending through the clamping member I0, are completely covered by the wall portion 9, thereby preventing contact with the screw-threaded ends of the screws I2, of a sponge, chamois, or other material used in wiping water from the wiping element I6 and adjacent portions of the squeegee.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the holder 5a is of substantially channel-shaped construction having wall portions I8 and I5a between which is intended to be positioned a wiping element |60, as shown in dotted lines, the wall portion I8 having screw-threaded apertures formed therein adapted to receive the screws indicated at I2a. for clamping the wiping element securely to the holder, the wall portion I8 of the struc` ture shown in Fig. 3 serving as the clamping member. In the structure shown in Fig. 3 the wall portion I8 is bent outwardly and backwardly upon itself to provide a protector I9 adapted to cover the otherwise exposed ends 20 of the screwthreaded portion of the screws |2a.
The modified construction shown in Fig. 4 comprises a holder b of channel-shaped form having side walls 2| and |5b and having a separate clamping member or strip 22 positioned in the channel of the holder, the said strip 22 having screw-threaded apertures formed therein to receive the threaded shank portion of screws |217k for clamping the wiping element |61)y between the member 22 and wall portion |51) of the holder, the wall portion 2| in the structure shown in Fig. 4 being provided for covering the exposed threaded end portion of the screws |2b` in the manner and for the purpose similar to that described with reference to the structure shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the present invention provides a structure wherein a sponge, chamois, or the like, used for wiping waterfrom thesqueegee is protected against contact with the exposed threaded end portions of the screws, thereby protecting the sponge or chamois against damage from contact therewith.
Obviously, the present invention is not limited tothe precise construction and arrangement shown and described, as the same may be Variously modied without departing from .the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim a d desire to cover by Letters Patent, is: l
1. A squeegee comprising a wiping element, a holder therefor, a clamping member engageable with said wiping element, securing means operatively related to and extending through said clamping member and holder for securing the wiping element thereto, and protecting means carried by said holder adjacent one edge thereof and adjacent said clamping member for covering the end of said securing means extending through said clamping member. l
2. A squeegee comprising a wipingelement, a holder therefor, a clamping member formed inwith said holder and engageable .with said wiping element, a plurality `of screwthreaded securing'means operatively related to said clamping member .and holder for securing said wiping element therebetween, and protecting means formed integrally with said holder adjacent one edge thereof for covering the screwthreaded ends of said securing means adjacent said one edge of the holder.
3. A squeegee comprising an elongated wiping element, an elongated channel-shaped holder therefor, an elongated clamping member formed integrally with said holder and engageable with said wiping element, a plurality of securing means operatively related to said clamping member and holder for securing a wiping element between the clamping member and a portion of said holder, and protecting means formed integrally with said holder adjacent one side thereof for coveringv the end of said securing means adjacent said one side of the holder.
4. A squeegee comprising an elongated wiping element, an elongated channel-shaped holder therefor, one Wall portion of. said channel providing an elongated clamping member engageable with said wiping element, a plurality of screw-threaded securing means operatively related to said clamping member and another portion of the holder for securing the wiping element therebetween, said holder having an integral portion folded outwardly and backwardly upon said wall portion'along a longitudinal line adjacent one edge thereof to provide a covering for the screw-threaded ends of said securing means.
5. A squeegee comprising an elongated wiping element, an elongated channel-shaped holder therefor, one wall portion of said channel being folded inwardly and backwardly upon itself to provide an elongated clamping member engagelated to said member for securing said wiping element between the member and said holder, said securing means extending through the other wall of the channel and through said clamping member and terminating short of the wall on which said member is formed.
6. A squeegee comprising an elongated wiping element, an elongated channel-shaped holder therefor, an elongated clamping member in said channel and extending longitudinally thereof, securing means engageable with the holder and clamping member for securing the wiping element therebetween, one end of said securing means terminating within said channel.
