ELECTRIC SHAVER GUARD AND CLEANER Filed Sept. 7, 1937 f9 INVENTOR.
- BY I WHEY.
Patented Mar. 5, 1940 PATENT OFFICE ELECTRIC SHAVER GUARD AND CLEANER Robert A. Williams, Denver, 0010., assignor to C. E. Burns, Stamford, Conn.
Application September 7, 1937, Serial No. 162,567
8 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination cleaner and guard for electric shavers.
The slotted heads and cutter bars of electric shavers have very delicate blades which are liable to injury and corrosion. thereby quickly destroying the effectiveness of the shaver.
The principal object of this invention is to proride a guard which will protect the blades from all mechanical contacts and injuries; which will simultaneously clean the cutter bar of all adherent foreign matter; and which will preserve the blades in oil or similar corrosion preventing fluid.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the guard that the cleaning operation will be a part of the use of the guard so that it will be impossible to place the guard upon the head without simultaneously cleaning the cutter bar and blades.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and eficiency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
m In the drawing:
Fig. 1 illustrates a typical electric shaver of the open cutter bar type.
Fig. 2 illustrates the same shaver with the improved guard in place thereon.
M Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guard.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section therethrough.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the head of the shaver with the guard in place thereon.
Fig. 6 is a cross section through the shaver head and guard taken on the line B-6, Fig. 2.
A typical electric shaver is illustrated at II] with its slotted head at l I. In the type of shaver for which this invention is particularly designed, the head H is hollow and encloses a reciprocating cutter bar 2| having passage I2 throughout its entire length. The head projects from the shaver proper, there being a shoulder [3 formed by the shaver housing along each side of the head.
The improved guard consists of a channel-like housing or cap M open along one of its sides. Flanges I5 preferably extend along each edge of the open side. One end of the cap I4 is closed by means of an end plate l6, which projects beyond the open side thereof, the other end is open.
A brush member ll, preferably of the spiral bristle type formed on a twisted wire stem I8, is soldered or otherwise secured to the end plate l6 so that it will project into the channel of the cap it and extend throughout the length thereof.
It is preferred to allow the free extremity of the 5 brush to project slightly beyond the open end of the'cap.
The "bottom of the channel contains a leather or felt pad 2B which is saturated with a lubricating and corrosion preventing oil. In the particular embodiment illustrated, the pad is secured in place by being passed through openings in the cap and thence clamped by means of a clamping bale E9. The method of securing the pad is simply illustrative as it could be secured in place in 5 a variety of ways.
To place the guard on the shaver, it is only necessary to enter the extremity of the brush in the open end of the cutter bar channel I2 and then push the guard over the head to the position of Fig. 2, with the end plate over-lapping the side of the shaver housing. This forces the brush il entirely through the cutter bar causing the brush to sweep and clean the entire channel therein. The lubricating pad 20 coats the head and cutter bar with a film of protecting oil and also acts as a cushion to protect the blade edges from contact with the guard.
In this device the brush serves a double purpose, it is not only a cleaner for the shaver head but it provides means to hold the guard member in place without the use of snaps. latches, catches, etc. The brush is compressed as it passes into the restricted channel of the cutter bar and the resilient bristles snap along the teeth or blades thereof to efficiently clean them. The expansion of the brush within the channel effectively locks the cap thereon until it is manually removed.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired 40 to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A guard member for electric shavers comprising: a channel-like housing; a stationary brush supporting member aflixed to one extremity of and extending through-out the length of said housing; and bristles projecting outward from said brush supporting member toward the inner face of said housing.
2. A guard member for electric shavers comprising: a channel-like housing having an open side; an end plate closingone end of said housing; 56
a stationary brush supporting stem fixed to said end plate and extending from said end plate longitudinally of said housing; and bristles projecting radially outward from said stem toward the inner face of said housing.
3. A guard member for electric shavers comprising: a channel-like housing'having an open side; an end plate closing one end of said housing; and a spiral bristlebrush member fixed to said end plate and extending from said end plate longitudinally of said housing; and edge flanges extending along each edge of the open side of said housing.
4. A guard member for electric shavers comprising: a channel-like housing; a brush member extending throughout the length of said housing; and a pad member secured along the bottom of said housing.
5. A guard member for electric shavers comprising: a channel-like housing; a brush member extending through-out the length of said housing; a pad member secured along the bottom of said housing; and means for detachably securing said pad member in place.
6. A guard member for electric shavers comprising: a channel-like housing; a brush member extending throughout the length of said housing; and a pad member secured along the bottom of said housing, said pad member being saturated with oil. I
7. A combined protecting cap and brush for electric shavers of the type having a head and a hollow cutter bar within said head, comprising: a channel member of a length sufficient to extend along, and enclose said head; a brush supporting member contained within and extending through out the length of said channel member, and be ing fixedly secured at its one extremity to said channel member, the other extremity of said brush member being free. for insertion in the hollow cutter bar to hold said cap in place on said head and bristles projecting radially outward fromsaid brush supporting member throughout its length.
8. The combination with an electric shaver having a hollow slotted cutting head, of a cap member shaped to enclose said head; and a bristled brush secured to said cap member and extending into the hollow of said head.
