Description
July-13, 1937. A ARCE CIGARETTE AND MATCH CASE Filed Oct. 25, 1955 /NVEN for? A BROS/0 A Rc E' 57M m l A TrOH/VEY Patented July 13, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to cigarette and match cases, and has for its object the production of a simple and eiiicient cigarette case which is so constructed as to conveniently sit up in an open position so that cigarettes may be easily and conveniently removed from the case and burned matches deposited within a suitable compartment formed within the case.
A further object of this invention is the production of a simple and ecient cigarette case preferably formed of metal or other similar material, the case consisting of a container which is pivotally mounted within a frame, the frame and container being capable of being swung at an angle relative to each other and locked in this position whereby the container may be conveniently supported in an open position.
Other objects and advantagesof the present invention will appear throughout the following n0 specication and claims.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cigarette case, a portion of the frame being shown in section;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cigarette case in its open position shown resting upon a support;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the cigarette case;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view through the cigarette casing the frame being shown swung to an open position for uncovering the open end of the cigarette container;
Figure 6 is a section taken on line 6--6 of Figure 2 showing the interlocking means for holding the container and frame in an open position.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that A designates the outer supporting frame which is preferably of a square or rectangular structure having a downwardly bent or folded abutment flange I I along the top edge and upon one side, as indicated clearly in Figures 1 and 3.
The frame A comprises side members I2 and top and bottom members I3 and I4 respectively. The top and bottom members I3 and I4 are slightly inclined toward the side edge in the horizontal plane or are slightly inclined downwardly from their outer edge in the direction of the abutment ange II previously described.
A container B is pivotally mounted between the side members I2 upon the pivot bolts I5, and this container B is preferably formed from -a blank sheet of material comprising a bottom I6 and (Cl. 20G-38) front and rear walls I'I and I8 respectively. 'I'he iront and rear walls II and I8 are provided with overlapping flanges I9, as shown clearly in Figure 1, and the pivot bolts I5 extend through the side members I2 and also through the overlap- 5 ping flanges I9, as shown in Figure 4, as well as in detail in Figure 6, the bolts I5 carrying nuts 2U for holding the bolts in place and also permitting the tension of the flanges to be increased or decreased as will be hereinafter described. 10 These anges I9 because of their overlapping relation will constitute a spreading spring-like action to tend to hold the container B in a set position within the frame A. It should be noted that the overlapping anges I9 will provide an 15 efficient frictional gripping action against the side members I2 through the medium of the outwardly punched tits 2I formed in the flanges I9,
as shown in Figure 6. The side members I2 are also provided with outwardly punched tits 22 20 which are adapted to be interlocked with the tits 2I when the container B is swung to the position shown in Figure 2, thereby holding the container B at an angle to the frame A in substantial X-like formation, and in this manner provide an 25 efficient support for the container B when in an open position and supporting the container B in this position against accidental displacement. The tension of the outwardly struck tits or knobs 2l and 22 may be increased or decreased by tight- 30 ening the nuts 20 upon the bolts I5 should sufcient tension fail to produce the desired locking action upon the interlocking tits 2| and 22.
When the container B is swung to a Closed position, such as is shown in Figure 3, the abut- 3 ment flange I I will limit the swinging movement of the container B and constitute a stop to hold the container B in a closed position. The inclined relation of the walls of the top and bottom members I3 and I4 will facilitate the swing- 4o ing of the container B to and from an open position with the frame A.
A suitable match scratching pad 23 may be supl porte-d upon the outer face of the container B within the supporting frame 24. The container 45 B is also provided with a partition 25, which partition is provided with a square frame-like folded portion 26 at its bottom to constitute a rest for burned matches. The partition 25 will divide the container B into a cigarette containing compart- 50 ment 21 and a match containing compartment 28.
It should be understood that the present cigarette case so described, may be used for supporting cigars or other articles without departing from the spirit of the invention, and it is not 55 desired to limit this invention to merely a cigarette case.
Certain detail changes in the mechanical consure, pivot bolts for pivotally securing the container and frame together and extending through the side members and through the ilanges, and interiitting tits punched in the ilanges and side members and adapted to interlock when the container is swung at an angle with respect to the frame for holding the container in a set angularly adjusted position with respect to the frame whereby the container and frame may assume an' X-like formation, the bottom of the frame and container constituting a means for supporting the device in an upright open position.
2. A device oi' the class described comprising a frame consisting oi a pair of side members and a top and bottom member, a container formed from a' sheet oi' material and consisting of. a bottom and a. front and rear section, the i'ront and rear sections having overlapping sidei ilanges normally exerting an outwardly expanding pressure, pivot bolts for pivotally securing the container and frame together and extending through the side members and through the ilanges, intertting tits punched in the ilanges and side members and adapted to interlock when the container is swung at an angle with respect to the i'rame for holding the container in a set an gularly adjusted position with respect to the frame whereby the container and frame may assume an X-like formation, the bottom of the frame and container constituting means for supporting the
