BOOKING-CHAIR.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,863, dated July 13, 1858.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, ISAAC P. CARRIER, of South Glastonbury, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rocking- Chairs; a'nd I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification a'nd drawings, and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe the construction, and referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.

The nature of this improvement consists in constructing the chair so that the seat or upper portion thereof will oscillate and a free and easy motion produced by the aid of reaction springs.

In the accompanying drawings, A are the legs of the chair.

B, is the seat and upper portion of the chair. C, the lower round thereof. D, the upper round. E the frame or arms, secured to the seat of the chair projecting downward, and the lower end of Which is secured to the lower rounds, C, by pins or bolts a.

F, is a rod bent on a circle, struck from the center of the pins or bolts a through the center of the upper rounds D.

G are springs placed on the rod F.

I-I, is a stud secured in the center (or nearly so) of the under side of the chair and slotted, so as to work each side of the rod F, and against the springs G. Now as the chair oscillates the stud H, strikes and closes up the springs, first one side then the other producing a pleasant, free and easy motion thereto.

c is a pin, by the use of which the seat may be secured from motion and at suoli an inclination as desirable. A spring catch or its equivalent may be substituted for the pin c.

The advantage derived by this improvement, over others now in use are: It has no rockers, over which persons are liable to stumble and fall, and under which children not infrequently get their fingers hurt. Also is not liable to get broken as those With rockers. It has also the advantage of the stationary chair and may be provided with casters to correspond With other furniture.

I/Vhat I claim therefore and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the frame or arms E, rod F, springs stud H, and the pin c holes b substantially in the manner and for the purpose as described.
