BOOKING-CHAIR.

To all whom i may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS WV. CURRIER, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Recumbent Rocking-Chair; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l, denotes a side elevation of the said chair as it appears when resting upon its casters or the legs of its stand, Fig. 2, is a vertical, central and longitudinal section of the said chair; Fig. 3, is a top view of it; Fig. 4, a side elevation of it as it appears when supported upon its rockers; Fig. 5, is a side elevation of it as it appears, when its back is depressed to its lowest position and the leg rest elevated to its highest position and having the foot rest turned outward; Fig. 6, exhibits a side view of the lever latches and their operating lever, all of which are attached or connected to the inner side of the front cross bar of the chair stand as will be hereinafter described.

In order more clearly to represent the construction of my chair, I have exhibited it, as not upholstered, or in other words as not furnished with back, seat, or leg cushions, the respective frames of said cushions being duly shown in their proper places.

In these drawings, A represents a stool or chair stand constructed of two side or leg frames a, a, united together by the transverse bars o, c. A caster CZ, if desirable, may be applied to the foot of each leg, although such is not necessary to my invention.

The back B, of the chair is so hinged to the rear bar, o, of the chair stand that the back may be inclined or moved from nearly a vertical position backward as far as circumstances may require, the positions of one of the hinges being represented in dotted lines at, o, in Figs. l, and 2.

Arm rest-s, C, C, are jointed to the back by means of curved arms, f, projecting from the said arm rests, and turning on center pins or screws, g, extending through them and screwed or xed in the back, each arm rest having two of said arms, f, and being formed with a space or recess, 7L, between the upper part of its two arm rests in order to enable the side bar, z', of the back to enter the said recess and give lateral support to the arm rest, when the said arm rest is moved forward to its front position and the chair is supported by its rockers. Each arm rest, C, has a lever, D, hinged or jointed to it as shown at c, (see Figs. l, and 2,) such lever being hinged or jointed to the front bar, c, of the chair stand as shown at, t, in Figs.

l, and 2, and made to extend downward :rockers being connected by two cross bars m, n, arranged as shown in the drawings. A curved notched rack, H, extends backward from each lever, D, and directly underneath a front bar, c, of the chair stand. Each notched rack operates in connection with one of two lever latches, I, which are arranged on the inner side of the bar, c, and turn on fulcra, o, o, as shown in Fig. 6. Another lever, K, is also applied to the inner side of the bar c, and so that one of its arms shall be in contact with the upper sides of the two inner arms of the lever latches, I, I, the other arm of the said lever K, being furnished with a cord and tassel as shown at, 29, which when pulled upward serves to move the lever, K, and cause it to impart motion to the latches, I, I, such as will move them out of the notches of their respective racks, I-I, I-I. It is by means of the said racks and latches, that the parts of the chair are maintained in their proper positions, whether the chair be supported by its rockers or on its casters or legs, also when the back is declined to its lowest position.

The back and seat cushion frames of the chair are shown at L, and M, as fastened respectively to the back B, and the chair stand A. A leg rest Vframe N, (which when the chair is complete is to be upholstered) is hinged to the front bar c, of the chair stand and extends downward and rests on the front cross bar n, of the rockers. This leg frame N, -is to be entirely separate from the levers D, D, (which are jointed to the arm rests) and so that it can be moved independently of them, or in other words raised on its hinges in order to enable a foot rest, O, which is hinged to its lower end to be thrown outward from the position shown in Figs. 1, and 2, into that which is eX,- hibited in Fig. 5. This leg rest has two ears or projections, 1, r, extended from it as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 each being so arranged with respect to the rocker that is below it as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 5. In the latter figure, it will be perceived, that the curve of the rocker acting in connection with the ear or projection directly over it prevents the leg rest from vibrating forward independently of the chair, while the latter is being rocked. Vhen, however, the chair may be resting on its casters or legs, the curve of the rocker becomes so far depressed as to enable the leg rest to be easily elevated sufficiently to allow the foot rest to be moved from its rearward to its forward position. l/Vlien, the parts of the chair are in the situations as represented in Fig. 5, the foot rest will be maintained by means of ears or projections, s, s, extending from it and resting on the rockers.

A chair constructed in the above described manner can easily be converted into either a recumbent or a rocking chair and be supported either by its rockers or on its legs or casters as circumstances may require. By means of the arms, f, extended from each arm rest, C, the latter is made to assume a correct position at whatever angle of inclination the back of the chair may be arranged.

I claim- The above described mode of combining rockers F, F, with the chair stand, A, and the recumbent back B, viz., by levers D, D, and arms E, E, arranged and connected with the back, B, the arm rests C, C, and the chair stand A, and ointed to the rockers substantially in manner as described so as to enable a person by laying hold of and moving the back, either to cause the chair to be supported on its legs 0r on its rockers as occasion may require.
