(Cl. 132-83) This invention relates to an improved compact or vanity case and one object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with an construct the powder container that when it is mounted in a section of a compact, it will extend for only a portion of the length of the compact section and the remainder of the compact section serve as a well into which the powder is delivered for use. Therefore, powder in desired quantities can be delivered from the container into the well of the compact section for use and the bulk of the powder retained in the container where it will be prevented from spilling out of the compact while the compact is open for use and also prevented from sifting out of a compact placed in a hand bag.
A still further object of the invention is to so form the container that the powder will be well distributed in the well orpan of the compact section when discharged from the container and permitted to be easily taken. up by a powder puif.
Another object of the invention is to provide the container with improved means for closing a discharge slot or series of openings formed in a side wall thereof and improved means for actuating the closure to move it from its normally closed position to an opened position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for breaking up powder which may become caked in the container and directing loose powder towards the outlet slot or openings, said means being carried by and moved with the actuating means for the closure so that it will be moved whenever the actuating means for'the closure is moved.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient in operation and application to use.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In describing the invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which the vanity case or compact illustrated in Figure 1 consists of companion sections l and 2 which are hinged to each other as shown at 3. The section I is equipped with a mirror 4 and the section 2 is formed bordering strip 5 defining a well or pan 6. The section 2 is also provided with a latch l of a conventional construction for securing the two sections when closed. While the section I has been shown carrying a full length mirror and the section 2 only serves as a powder pan, it is to be understood that provision may be made for rouge in either the section I or the section 2 and that the compact may be constructed to serve as a combined cigarette case and vanity case if so desired by providing the section I with cigarette holding means. Such modifications have not 5 been illustrated as the present invention relates to the powder container mounted in the section 2 and occupying a portion of the'length thereof as shown in Figure l.
The powder container 8 which fits into the sec- 7 tion 2 is formed of metal or any other desired material and is of such dimensions that it fits snugly into place with its side walls in close contacting engagementwith side flanges of the bordering strip 5. By providing this sliding closure, it may be easily moved to an opened position, powder then poured into the container through the largefilling openin and the closure then slid back into a closed position in which powder will be prevented from spilling-out through the filling opening.
In order to prevent the powder from passing out of the container into the pan except when use of the powder is desired there has been provided aclosure block l6 which is hollow and open at one end as shown in Figure 8 to receive a spring; l1. ,This spring projects through the open end of the block and is coiled about a pin l8 projecting from a side wall of the container. .By this in Figures 1 and 7, but maybe shifted to an opened position in which it is out of covering relation to the discharge openings as shown in Figure 6. The side face of the block bearing against thQ'Wflll 9 of the powder container is recessed as shown in Figures 5 and 6 to form a pocket in which packing I9 is mounted so that a tight closure for the discharge openings will be provided and leakage of powder through these openings prevented when the closure is in the closed position. The base of the closure block is also recessedas shownin Figure 8 to receive packing 2| which preferably consists of a continuation of the packing 19 as shown in Figure 2, but may be formed separate therefrom and serves as a seal for the slot 22 formed in the top wall of the container. This slot 22 is provided to receive the stem or shank 23 carriedby the base and at its ,outer end provided with a head 24 in order that by placing a thumb or finger-upon the head and exerting pressure, the block may he slid from a closed position to anopened position.
It is desired to agitate the powder and feed it ;towards the discharge openings when the block is slid towards an opened position and in order to do so, there has been provided an agitating and feeding device constructed and mounted as shown in Figures 2, 5 and 6. Referring to these figures,

The lever is pivoted to the container by a pin 28 and at its free end is formed with forks 29 straddling a tongue or pin 30 carried by the base of the closure block. By this arrangement, the lever will be swung about its pivot pin as the block is shifted longitudinally from the closed position f Figure 5 to the opened position of Figure 6 and the toothed head 3| at the free end of the side arm will swing from a position at one side of the block in which it is clear of the base 20 to a position in overlapping relation to the base adjacent one end of the block. During this movement, the toothed head will serve to scrape loose powder in case the powder has formed a cake in the container and the loose powder will be fed towards the discharge openings. It will thus be seen that when the closure block is shifted to an opened position, powder in the container will be directed towards the discharge openings and fed out through these openings into the pan or well 6 where it will flow along the bottom of the pan and become distributed thereon as a thin layer which may be easily taken up by a powder puff for use. A relatively large quantity of powder may be stored in the container, but only a small quantity will flow out through the discharge openings when the block is moved to the opened position and as this powder will be practically all used and the block returned to a closed position by the spring l'l, there will be no powder in the pan to sift out between the two sections of the compact when the compact is closed and placed in a hand bag. The fact that all of the powder in the pan is used and the closure block is held in the closed position by the spring [1, prevents powder accumulating in the pan during periods between use of the compact and, therefore, when the compact is opened for use, there will be no danger of powder spilling out of the same and soiling a persons clothing.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the operation thereof and the method of applying the same to use will be readily understood. It will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may beresorted to, without departing from the spiritor sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described, a body formed with a well, alcontainer fitting snugly in said well and being of less length thanthe well to provide a pan between the container and one end of the well, a side wall of the container being formed with a discharge opening establishing communication between the container and the pan, a closure for the discharge opening mounted in the container for movement into and out of blocking relation to the opening, and means in the container for directing powder towards the discharge opening formed separate from the closure and moved towards the opening for discharging powder through the opening as the closure moves out of blocking relation to the opening.
2. In a compact, a section formed with a well, a powder container in saidwell spaced from one end thereof to provide a pan, a side wall of said container having a discharge opening establishing communication between the container and the pan, a closure for said opening slidably mounted in said container, and means for feeding powder in the container towards the opening during movement of the closure to an open position formed separate from the closure and actuated by movement of the closure.
3. In a compact, a body formed with a well, a powder container in said well spaced from one end thereof to provide a powder receiving pan and having an exposed side wall formed with a discharge opening, a closure for the discharge opening slidable in the container against the said side wall longitudinally thereof and yieldably held against movement out of blocking relation to the discharge opening, and means for feeding powder towards the discharge opening pivotally mounted in the container and connected with the closure for movement thereby in a direction to urge powder towards the opening when the closure is shifted towards an opened position.
4. In a compact, a body formed with a well, a powder container in said well spaced from one end thereof to provide a powder receiving. pan and having an exposed side wall formed with a discharge opening, a closure for the discharge opening slidable in the container against the said side wall thereof and yieldably held against movement out of blocking relation to the discharge opening, a lever formed separate from the closure and pivotallymounted in said container and connected with the closure for movement thereby when the closure is moved, and a member carried by said lever and adapted to urge powder towards the discharge opening when the lever is swung about its pivot by movement of the closure towards an opened position.
5. In a compact, a body formed with a well, a powder container in said well spaced from one end thereof to provide a powder receiving pan and having an exposed side wall formed with a discharge opening, a closure for the discharge opening slidable in the container against the said side wall and yieldably held against movement out of blocking relation to the opening, a lever in said container pivotally mounted at one end and having a fork at its other end, a pin carried by said closure and engaged in the forked end of said lever to move the lever when the closure is slid, and a side extension for said lever having means carried thereby for urging powder towards the discharge opening when the closure is shifted towards an opened position.
6. In a compact, a body formed with a well, a powder container in said well spaced from one end thereof to provide a. powder receiving pan and having an exposed side wall formed with a discharge opening, a closure for the discharge opening slidable in the container against the said. side wall and yieldably held against movement out of blocking relation to the opening, a lever in said container pivotally mounted at one end and having a fork at its other end, a pin carried by said closure and engaged in the forked end of said lever to move the lever when the closure is slid, and a side arm projecting laterally from. said lever intermediate the length thereof and bent intermediate its length to provide a free end portion extending longitudinally of the lever in transverse spaced relation thereto and terminating in an upstanding toothed head adapted to engage powder and urge the powder towards the discharge opening when the closure is shifted towards an opened position.
7. In a compact, a body formed with a well, a powder container in said well spaced from one end thereof to provide a powder receiving pan and having an exposed sidewall formed with a discharge opening, a closure for the discharge opening slidable in the container against the said side wall and consisting of a hollow block open at one end and a. backing for the block, a pin projecting from a wall of the container towards the open end of said block, a helical spring extending longitudinally in the block with one end portion projecting from the open end thereof and coiled about said pin, said spring yieldably holding the closure in a normal position for closing the discharge opening, a stem carried by the backing for said block and projecting outwardly through a slot formed in said container, packing carried by the block and its backing and sealing the discharge opening and the slot of the container when the closure is in its closed position, and means for urging powder in the container towards the discharge opening when the closure is shifted towards an opened position.
8. In a device of the character described including a shell, a container therein formed with an outlet, a closure slidable into and out of closing relation to the outlet, and oscillating means separate from said closure and actuated by the movement of the latter for feeding powder in the container toward said outlet.
9. In a device of the character described, a container formed with an outlet, a closure movable into and out of position to close the outlet, and a, feeder for urging powder in the container towards the outlet formed separate from the closure and being pivotally mounted in the container and actuated by the closure.
10. In a device of the character described, a container having an outlet, a closure for the outlet mounted in the container for reciprocating movement into and out of a closed position, and a powder feeder formed separate from the closure and being mounted for oscillating movement in the container towards and away from the outlet and actuated by movement of said closure.
11. In a device of the character described, a container having an outlet, a closure for the outlet slidable into and out of a closed position in the container, and means for feeding powder to the outlet formed separate from the closure and being pivotally mounted in the container for swinging movement in the plane of the closure towards and away from the outlet and actuated by movement of the closure.
12. In a compact, an open powder dispensing chamber, a powder container in the plane of the dispensing chamber having a side wall facing the chamber, the bottom of the container being flush with the bottom. of the chamber, the said side wall of the container being formed with a discharge opening, a closure for the opening mounted within said container and slidable longitudinally of the wall into and out of position to close the opening, and actuating means for said closure extendingexternally of the container for manual operation.

In a compact, an open powder dispensing chamber, a powder container in side by side relation to the dispensing chamber having a side wall facing the chamber and formed with a discharge opening, a closure for the discharge opening movable into and out of position to close the open ing, manual actuating means therefor, and means able into and out of effective position, manual actuating means for said closure, and pivoted means independent of the closure and actuated by the latter for urging powder in the container towards the discharge opening when said closure 5 is moved in one direction.
