Description
Sept. 15, 1936.,
E. ,W. FEND DISPENSING CAP Filed March 4, 1956 ATTORNEY WXTNESS Patented Sept. 15, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a dispensing device and more especially to a dispensing cap for use on receptacles.
The primary object of the invention is the pro- 5 vision of a dispensing cap which, on the employment thereof upon a receptacle containing powder or granular material, will enable determined quantities of such materials to be discharged and conveniently deposited, thus avoiding waste of the material during the dispensing operation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this character, wherein the material discharged therefrom can be guided to the place of deposit, as for example when dispensing a dentifrice in powder form or in semi-solid condition, whereupon the latter can be delivered in a determined quantity onto a toothbrush and the dispensed quantity distributed upon the brush throughout the extent thereof and in contradistinction to heaping the material thereon.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this character, which is extremely simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in its purpose, readily and easily operated, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle having the cap constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view showing the receptacle tilted for the dispensing of its contents through the cap.
Similar reference characters indicate corre sponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a receptacle which in this instance is made from metal and is adaptable for containing a dentifrice or other powder material or granular substance, while fitted upon the upper open end of this receptacle A is a cap constituting the present invention and hereinafter fully described.
The cap comprises a shell-like body 5 preferably made from metal and constitutes a closure for the open end of the receptacle A, the said shell body being telescoped over the open end of said receptacle for the tight fitting of these together. The shell body 5 is formed with a contracted elongated mouth 6 having at one side thereof a lip I, and working within this mouth is a bladed measuring wheel 8 providing measuring pockets 9 between the blades of the same, the wheel axle I9 being journaled in opposite ends of the mouth 6.
The axle I0 is extended beyond one end of the mouth 5 and has fitted therewith a turning knob H carrying ratchet pins or lugs I2, these being engaged with a resilient ratchet acting member or spring I3 fixed exteriorly upon the body 5 of the cap so that the wheel 8 when rotated will be latched through the coaction of the pins or lugs I2 and the member or spring I3, thus avoiding free turning of'the said wheel 8 as well as backward movement of this wheel. The member or spring I3 acting upon the lugs or pins I2 sets up a vibrating action which is sufficient upon the wheel 8 to dislodge the material therefrom while the said member or spring I3 holds the blades of the wheel 8 in a position to close the open end of the receptacle A when at rest as the pins or lugs I2 are located on the knob I I and have coaction with the member or spring l3 for this purpose.
The wheel 8 by the pockets 9 will deliver determined quantities of the contents of the receptacle A when the same is tilted for the dispensing of its contents, and the lip I will function as a director or guide for the dispensed material so that it can be delivered at the place for the deposit thereof and be distributed, as for example, upon a toothbrush without waste of the contents of the receptacle during the dispensing period.
What is claimed is:
A cap of the kind described comprising a shelllike body having a tapered formation and open at opposite ends, the opened larger end being adapted to fit with a container at an open end thereof, a bladed measuring wheel rotatably fitted in the smaller end of said body and providing a plurality of measuring pockets therein, a turning axle journaled in the body and having the wheel fixed thereto, a turning knob on said axle and having a stern next to the body, a plurality of pins carried by the turning knob and disposed concentrically in spaced relation to each other about said stem, a resilient latching arm externally on the body and engageable with the pins for ratchet action thereon to hold the wheel in selected rotary adjusted positions and a lip forming an extension of a portion of the wall about the smaller opening.
