Description

Dec. 27, 1938. L. J. KELLY POWDER DISPENSER Filed May 26, 1957 vw\J\\\\\\\\\\\ I AWJ/QZ/Km ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 27, 1938 NETED STATES 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a dispensing device and more especially to a powder dispenser.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a dispenser of this character, wherein the same can be hung or mounted on a wall or other support for suspension thereby and in which determined quantities of powder can be delivered therefrom on the operation of the same and in this manner eliminating waste of the contents of the dispenser during operation thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the same acts as a time saver for the dispensing of tooth powder, talcum powder or other powder substances either directly onto a toothbrush, the palm of the hand or into a receptacle as may be required and the dispensed material or substance being measured into a determined quantity thus avoiding waste thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, sanitary, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is an elevation partly in section of a dispensing device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the dispensing device comprises a body or casing 5 preferably made from metal although it may be made from any other suitable material and has a contracted lower hopper-like neck 6 formed with a substantially rectilinear or oblong shaped discharge mouth 1 while the upper end of this body 50 or casing is open and fitted with a removable cover or lid 8. Exteriorly of the body or casing t is a bracket 9 so as to permit of the hanging of the device upon a wall or other support, the bracket being fixedly attached to the said body or casing in any desirable manner.
Disposed interiorly of the neck 6 and arranged transversely thereof is a measuring and dispensing rotor in the form of a roller it having at diametrically opposite sides measuring and delivering pockets H, the center axle l2 of the said roller if! being suitably journaled in the neck 6 and one end exteriorly of the device has fixed thereto a turning handle or crank 13 for manual rotation of the said roller Ill.
Fitting opposite flat side walls of the body or casing 5 is a resilient yoke E5 of substantially U-form having its lower end closed and bent to provide a laterally and upwardly curved keeper jaw it for engagement in the pockets H in single order on the rotation of the roller Hi. This jaw 56 functions as a vibrator at the top of the roller iii and permits its rotation in either direction as the smooth surface of the roller allows the jaw to slide over it until engaging with either pocket H therein. The yoke l5 at the side arms thereof is fixed at H to the body or casing 5 interiorly thereof in any suitable manner.
The roller Ill is set inwardly with respect to the mouth 1 and in this mouth is fixed a resilient or spring scraper member 8 for engagement in the pockets Ii to loosen powder or other substance received therein and sticking within the same. These pockets 1 l are of a size to receive a determined quantity of the contents of the body or casing 5 and on rotation of the roller it such measured or determined quantities can be dispensed or discharged through the mouth '5 for consumption. The body or casing 5 is filled through the open upper end thereof on the removal of the cover or lid 8 therefrom, it being separably telescoped onto the body or casing.
The tendency of the materials that are to be dispensed through the bottom of the casing 5 or mouth 1 is to arch over the opening and the loosening of the arched portion of the material at any point causes the material to cave in. The vibrator created by the yoke 15 will break the arch of the material and cause a cave-in of the same just at the slot or pocket in the roller H] to be received thereby.
Formed at the mouth I and extended rearwardly therefrom is an upwardly arched finger rest it so as to accommodate the fore finger of a hand of a person when holding a toothbrush so as to have the brush disposed with its bristles in the path of flow through the mouth 1 of the contents of powder or other substance being dispensed or discharged therefrom and in this manner contact of the toothbrush with the mouth is avoided and especially the bristles of the brush.
What is claimed is:
A dispenser of the character described comprising a container body for receiving powdered material and having a contracted hopper-like neck formed with a substantially rectilinear shaped discharge mouth, a pocketed roller journaled within the neck spaced inwardly from the mouth for controlling measured quantities of powdered material and dispensing the same through the said mouth, the pockets in the roller being substantially opposite each other and of rounded formation with opposite parallel straight ends, a substantially U-shaped resilient yoke fixed to and suspended within the body above the roller and having a laterally and upwardly curved jaw of a width equal to the pockets for fitting in the pockets in single order on the rotation of the roller with the ends of said jaw abutting the straight ends of the said pockets and also effecting a vibrator at the top of said roller as well as allowing reverse rotation thereof, and a resilient scraper member fixed within the mouth for engagement in the pockets and abutting the straight ends of the latter and coasting with the yoke to hold the roller centered in the neck and held against lateral displacement therein and effecting the loosening of the powdered material therefrom.
