POWDER CONTAINER AND DISPENSER Filed Jan 16, 1939 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented May 7, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POWDER CONTAINER AND DISPENSER Edward L. Penrod, Detroit, Mich.
Application January 16, 1939, Serial No. 251,218
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improved powder containers and dispensers.
An important object of the invention is to provide a novel container especially adapted for 5 use with powdered substances such as tooth powder and the like in which said contents may be dispensed in a sanitary manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a powder container and dispenser including a substantially oblong container permanently sealed at one end and having a removable friction cap at the other end thereof. Transverse grooves are formed along opposite sides of the container for receiving a slide member which is formed with a depressed portion defining a pocket to receive and dispense the contents of the container in a sanitary manner.
One of the more important features of the novel powder container and dispenser according to the present invention is that it comprises relatively few parts, each of which is characterized by simplicity and ruggedness of construction thereby minimizing initial cost of manufacture and reducing to a minimum damage other than that resultant from ordinary use.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of the application.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the improved powder container and dispenser;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 33 of Figure 3; v
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the slidable dispenser in operative position.
Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, a metallic receptacle for containing a powdered substance such as tooth powder or the like is indicated generally by the numeral l and is of substantially oblong formation having a sealed end wall II, the opposite end being closed by a removable friction cap l2. It is to be understood that tooth powder or the like may be packaged in the container with the dispenser forming a part thereof or, the container and dispenser may be manufactured and sold as a separate article adapted to be filled by the user. For this reason it is preferred to have 5 the friction cap l2 removable so that the container can be refilled as desired.
Longitudinal grooves 13 are formed on each side wall of the container l0 and in close proximity with the bottom portion thereof for supporting in sliding relation the dispenser l4, said dispenser being formed with inwardly extending flanges l5 frictionally engaging the grooves l3. One end l6 of the dispenser is formed with a depressed portion defining a pocket I! which in inoperative position is disposed beneath an outlet IB provided in the bottom wall of the container II] as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The end l6 of the dispenser I4 is provided with an extension [9 which serves to completely close the container [0 when the dispenser is in the position illustrated in Figure 2 v of the drawing.
The container and dispenser are normally maintained in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, at which time a quantity of the substance within the container will be received within the pocket I! through the opening l8. By engaging the rounded portion 20 of the dispenser I4 and urging the same outwardly the contents of the pocket will be exposed for use and by positioning a moistened tooth brush within said pocket-the powder will be applied to the tooth brush. This position of the dispenser is shown in Figure 5 of the drawing and it will be noted that the outlet l8 will be closed by the fiat portion of the dispenser which acts as a cut-off valve. By repeating the operation the pocket ll will again be charged so that withdrawing the same will permit ready dispensing of the powder. Also it will be understood, of course, by those skilled in the art that variations in the hereinabove described device involving the substitution of substantial equivalents for the devices de scribed are intended to be comprehended within the spirit of the present invention and that the invention is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and,
therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not aifect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In combination, a container having longitudinal grooves formed along the side walls and closely adjacent the bottom wall thereof, said container having a discharge outlet near one end thereof, a member formed with inwardly extending flanges frictionally engageable with and slidably disposed in said grooves, said member having a depressed portion in one end thereof forming a pocket for receiving contents discharged through said opening whereby said contents may be dispensed upon slidably moving said member beyond said outlet.
