ELATSIC WAIST BAND FOR GARMENTS Filed July 28, 1936 INVENTOR. Z 55 J. 66 518 IVA/V ATTORNEYS) Patented June 29, 1937 7 -UNITED STATES PATENT orries ELASTIC WAIST BAND FOR GARMENTS v Lee J. Sherman, Orange, N. J.
Application July 28, 1936, Serial No. 92,952
1 Claim.
This invention relates to ladies garments and particularly to means for fastening garments of the kind wherein the front or outer flap of the garment overlaps the opposite or inner flap, al-
though the invention is not necessarily limited to garments of this kind.
The main object is to provide a neat and simple garment which can be slipped on or off by the wearer as readily as a coat or bath robe, and
which will require but two manipulations for fastening it upon the wearer, and when fastened will have the fit and appearance of a tailored dress, skirt or a belted waist.
Another object is to provide an elastic fastener member or connector member so arranged in the garment that it may be adjusted around the waist of the wearer like an ordinary belt and over which the front or outer flap of the garment may be fastened, and whereby the garment may be adjusted to fit any figure neatly and snugly.
The type of garment to which this invention primarily relates is usually fitted with fastening means in the form of ribbons or tapes, which, when correctly positioned and tied, prevent the inner flap from showing beneath the front flap,
or of falling out of line.
It has already been proposed to provide a button on the inside flap and a corresponding buttonhole on the outside flap and to button the button on the outer flap over the inner one, but
such an arrangement does not allow for any adjustment or give a snug fit.
It has also been proposed to provide a tab or a strap having at its ends a button to co-operate with the button and buttonhole of the garment. As the inner flap is usually buttoned adjacent the hip, the adjustment of the garment about the waist requires a blind search for the buttonhole, and which sometimes is quite irritable.
The purpose with the present invention is to overcome the various disadvantages connected with the aforementioned old constructions by substituting for the ribbons, tapes, tubular waist lines or the like, a neat and effective fastening which can be adjusted to suit various sizes of garments, while capable of being readily fastened or unfastened.
In carrying out the objects of the invention an elastic tab or band is provided at the edge of the inner flap and another elastic tab or band is provided at the inside of the outer flap adjacent the hip. Each tab is provided with co-operating fastening means.
Other features and. advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description given with reference to the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the garment showing it adjusted on the wearer.
Figure 2 is a front elevation showing the garment partially adjusted.
Figure 3 is a cross-section along the line 3-3 of Figure 1. 10
Figure 4 is a View in perspective of the elastic tabs and fastening means according to the invention.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 showing a modification of the fastening means.
Referring to the drawing, the garment I0 is of the type known as a housedress, and as shown said garment opens at the front, so that the same may be put on in the same manner as a coat. The dress l0 comprises two front flaps H and 12. In the modification shown in the draw ing the flap H extends in a straight line over the full length of the garment, but the flap 12 extends laterally from the front at the waistline l3 and is buttoned over flap H at I4, 15 and I6. This construction produces the appearance of a tailored dress. The flap [2 may of course, be buttoned only at one place if desired, the additional buttons being added merely for the purpose of style and appearance. 39
The novel fastening means consist of two elastic straps or tabs I! and 18. The tab I1 is attached to the edge of the flap H at 19, and the tab I8 is attached to the garment at the point 20 at the waistline and adjacent the hip of the wearer.
The end l8a of the tab I8 is provided with a buckle 2| provided with a hook 22. The end Ila. of the tab I1 is folded back providing a slot 23 which is slipped over the hook 22 when the garment is adjusted thus affording a snug and neat fit. The end |8a of the tab I8 is preferably secured to the buckle 2| permanently by inserting the free end through the slot 24 and sewing it on to the obverse side of the tab H3.
The free end instead of being sewed on to the back side of the tab 18 may be provided with a second buckle 25 as shown in Figure 5. This construction permits shortening and lengthening of the tab l8 by varying the distance between the end Mia and the buckle 2|.
The hook 22 can be fitted with an inwardly projecting portion 26 whereby the slot 23 is maintained more securely.
The device herein described provides a fastening which can take the place of the ribbons and tapes heretofore employed and which can be adjusted as to effective length, and is capable of being fastened or unfastened at will and with comfort.
Having described the invention in detail the following is claimed:
A garment of the wrap around type having a blouse portion. anda skirt portion and a waistline zone definingsaidportions, said garment being split longitudinally forming two respectively overlying and underlying front sections, the blouse and skirt portion of the underlying section extending substantially to the center of the body, the edge of the blouse portion of the overlying section extending over and covering the edge of the blouse portion of the underlying section whereby a single breasted efiect is produced, a flap extending laterally from the skirt portion of said overlying section over the opposing skirt portion of said underlying section to the opposite hip, means for fastening said flap to said hip, separate means for adjusting said waistline zone snugly upon the waist of the wearer, said means comprising two elastic bands, one of said bands being secured to the edge of the underlying section and the other band being secured to the inside of the overlying section adjacent the hip of the wearer means for connecting said bands, said means being so positioned that the'bands may beconnected adjacent the front of the wearer.
