As known, sacks serving for transporting and storing various kinds of material, are closed by means of a rope, cord or the like, which is wrapped round the upper part of the sack. In 5 order to be able to open such sacks, a knife or cutting-tool must be brought between the sack and the rope in order to cut the latter. In this case however, one runs the risk of damaging the sack. Y
The invention has for its object to remove this difliculty and to provide a device which not only permits the opening of the sacks, parcels or the like in an easy way, but which also permits the opening of the sacks or the like without damaging them in any way. The device according to the invention preferably comprises two parts sli'dable with respect to each other, each part being provided with an opening for receiving the rope or cord in such a manner that the rope is cut when 20, drawing the parts apart.
To prevent accidental opening of the sacks, which is very undesirable, because the contents of the sacks may be wholly or partly lost, the device may be provided'with means to lock the slidable parts with respect to each other.
One way of carrying out the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Figs. 1 and 2 respectively show the twoparts of a device made according to the invention.
Fig. 3 shows the device with the two parts telescoped into each other.
Fig. 4 illustrates the manner in which the device is applied to the rope with which the mouth of the sack is tied.
Figs. 5 and 6 show the device provided with locking means.
Fig. 7 is a substantially transverse sectional view through the assembled device, according to Figs. 5 and 6, the view being on a slightly larger scale.
Fig. 8 is a similar cross sectional view of a further modification of the present invention.
Figs. 9 and 10 show vertical sections taken through devices according to the invention and.
provided with differently constructed locking means.
According to Figure 1 one part of the device comprises a flat case I, provided on both sides with apertures 2, facing each other. The other part comprises a fiat member 3 (Fig. 2), the lower part being provided with a slot 4 at an angle with the longitudinal axis of the said member.
Instead of an inclined slot any other construction which is capable of exerting a cutting action may be provided such as for example an aperture leading into a slot ending in a point, the said slot being disposed in the longitudinal axis of the member 3 as shown in Fig. 5.
When the flat member 3 is fitted within the case i, as shown in Fig. 3 the slot 4 in the said member 3 is in register with the apertures 2 in the case I.
In Figure 4 the rope which must be wrapped round the neck of the sack is indicated by i. This rope is drawn through the openings 2 (and thus through the upper part of the slot 5) and tied at 8, thus closing the neck of the sack. The flat body or member 3 is provided at the upper side with two parts 5 and 6 of a disc-like form (vide Fig. 2). These two disks are now folded along the line H, the ends 9 and. ii! of the rope being tied at 8 are brought between these disks and the whole is clenched and sealed.
When it is desired to open the sack it is only necessary to draw the flat member or body 3 out of the case. of the slot is cut by the slot during this movement and the sack is opened without any risk of damage. Instead of using a case i, as shown in Figure I, also a single small plate may successfully be used, the edges of which are bent in such a manner that they form a guide for the part 3, as shown in Figures 6 and 7. Since in this case one of the walls is omitted, only one opening is present for receiving the rope. Alternatively the part 3 may be provided with bent-over edges adapted to form a guide for the part I (see Fig. 8).
The apparatus shown in Figures 5 and 6 is provided with a locking device. Fig. 5 illustrates the one part 3 of the apparatus, while the other part I, in which the part 3 is slidable, is shown in Figure 6 in vertical cross-section and comprises a small plate having bent-over edges. Out of this part I a lip I3 is punched which may be a engaged within an opening I2 of the flat member 3. The sacks are now closed in the following manner. The rope being wrapped round the neck of the sack, is put through the openings and I4 and then tied. If the sack must be opened, the lip I3 is bent back and pressed out of the opening l2 after which the two parts may be slid apart. Instead of arranging the lip [13 on the part I, the part 3 may be provided with such a lip, in which case the opening is formed in the part I (see Fig. 9).
Any other suitable form of locking-means may be provided. Fig. 10, for example, shows a knob or projection [5 on the plate I (in place of the lip I3) adapted to fit within or engage a dent at The rope I at the upper end the point it of the part 3. The locking and unlocking operation is thus carried out in a very simple manner. Phe invention is, however, not limited to one of these forms of execution.
Though in the drawing the locking-device is shown combined with a small plate, having bentover edges, instead of this small plate the case according to Figure 1 may be used, in which event the locking-device, for example a lip, may be pressed through both walls of the case.
In some cases, as for example, when using the opening device with parcels, the part i may be completely omitted. In this case the device simply comprises the part 3 having only an opening ll for receiving and cutting the rope. Such a construction is particularly suitable in those cases in which the prevention of the damage of the packing-material does not play such an important part. With this device the opening may be carried out in an easy way without the use of an auxiliary means (knife and the like).
What I claim is:
1. In a fastener for a package having a cord wrapped about the package to close the same, the combination of two parts arranged slidably with respect to each other and provided with registering openings, a strand of said cord being adapted to pass through said openings, one of the latter having a portion of its wall capable of severing the cord by drawing said parts away from each other.
2. Device for opening tied sacks, parcels or the like without damaging same, comprising a case, provided on both sides with openings facing each other and a member slidable in the case, the member being provided with a slot or opening for cutting the rope, the arrangement being such that when the parts are telescopically engaged the upper part of the slot or opening is between the two openings in the case.
3. Device for opening tied sacks, parcels or the like without damaging same, comprising a case, provided on both sides with openings facing each other, a member slidable in the case, the member being provided with a slot or opening for cutting the rope, the arrangement being such that when the parts are telescopically engaged the upper part of the slot or opening is between the two openings in the case, the upper part of the member being provided with parts in the form of discs, which when folded on each other, clench the ends of the rope, closing the sacks.
4. Device for opening tied sacks, parcels or the like without damaging same, comprising a case, provided on both sides with openings facing each other, a member slidable in the case, the member being provided with a slot or opening for cutting the rope, the arrangement being such that when the parts are telescopically engaged the upper part of the slot or opening is between the two openings in the case and comprising means to lock the slidable parts with respect to each other.
5. Device for openingtied sacks, parcels or t e like, without damaging same, comprising a case, provided on both sides with openings facing each other, a member slidable in the case, the member being provided with a slot or opening for cutting the rope, the arrangement being such that when the parts are telescopically engaged the upper part of the slot or opening is between the two openings in the case, and comprising a lockingdevice formed by a lip punched out of one of the slidable parts, which may be put through an opening in the other slidable part.
6. Device for opening tied sacks, parcels or the like without damaging same, comprising a plate provided with an opening, the edges of the plate being bent over in such a manner that they form a guide for a member slidable in those edges, this member being provided with a slot or opening for cutting the rope.v

Device for opening tied sacks, parcels or the like without damaging same, comprising a plate provided with an opening, and a member the edges of which are bent over in such a manner that they form a guide for the plate, slidable in those edges, this member being provided with a slot or opening for cutting the rope, a device being present to lock the slidable parts with respect to each other.
10. In a fastener for a package, having a cord wrapped about the package to close the same, the combination of a plate having an orifice and a strand of said cord adapted to pass through said orifice, the latter having a portion of its wall capable of severing the cord by drawing the in plate in a direction away from the latter.
