IMPROVEM ENT IN Ll BRARY-TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,378, dated September 24, 1878; application filed August 1, 1878.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. DAVIS, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Library-Tables, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 represents a horizontal section of a table embracing my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof in the line m Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same in the line y y, Fig. 2.

The object of my invention is to provide a compact and convenient library-table, which may be used on either or all sides for writing purposes, supporting books, and filing papers, and may, when not in use, be completelyT inclosed to exclude dust; and it consists in an arrangement of a box-top, slideleaves, drawers, pigeon-holes, and hinged ledges, .which will be hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the top of my table, which is preferably made removable, and B C are its depending ends and sides.

I) are the hinged ledges; E E', the sliding leaves; F, the pigeon-holes; G, the door by which the latter are covered, and H H the drawers.

The ledges l) are hinged to the ends ll, and are made of a length and width equal with the top of the table, while by their arrange- Ament they are rendered susceptible of .being folded up against the ends, or of being swung to a horizontal position, in which latter position they form a convenient receptacle or support for books.

In order to hold the ledges D in their upper positions, I make use of buttons u., which are pivoted to what may be termed the bottom of the table, the same constituting a bottom to the parts beneath the table-top, and being marked I, while for the purpose of holding the ledges in their lower positions they are connected to jointed arms b, which fold up and are hidden when the ledges are not in use.

The bottom I rests on legs J, which may be made of any desirable form.

The leaves E E are arranged to be drawn out on opposite sides of the table, and the leaf E slides on the bottom I, while the leaf E is above the leaf E, and slides in grooves formed by cleats c and a false bottom, I.

The leaves E E are intended to be used in reading or writing; and in order to permit of bringing a book to a convenient angle inread- Y ing, I provide the leaf E with a hinged section, f, which can be lifted to and held in an inclined position.

The pigeon-holes F are formed above the false bottom l and face one side of the table, while in one. of them I arrange a slide, d, to support an inkstand.

Above the pigeon-holes F is formed a recess, c, to receive the door G. This door is hin ged to a supporting-piece, e', which remains in the recess e when the door is drawn out, as shown in Fig. 3.

The drawer H faces the side of the table opposite to the pigeon-holes F, and rests on the false bottom I', while the drawers H are ou opposite sides of the drawer H and the pigeen-holes, the same being arranged in pairs, and to pull out respectively on the opposite sides of the table.

By the above features I obtain a table possessing various important advantages, and which at the same time has a light and graceful appearance, and is not liable to get out of order.

In some cases I combine with the hinged section of the leaf E an adjustable book-rest, consisting of a bar or rail, against which the lower edge of the book placed ou said lsection lies.

I am aware that tables have heretofore been constructed with sliding leaves, and such I do not claim, broadly.
