6 Claims.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders, of the type illustrated in our copending application Serial Number 727,952, filed May 28, 1934, which has matured to Patent Number 2,021,724, granted Nov. 19, 1935, and has for its principal object the provision of a more simple and positive holdfast means for such binders; this invention being deemed a material improvement upon the attachment illustrated in our above referred to application, though in some respects it is similar.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear, it is thought, in the further description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing,
forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a binder to which our improved attachment is applied,
Figure 2 is a perspective view, somewhat enlarged, of the adjustable member of the attachment.
Obviously the device is simple, as it consists of but two parts, that is with the exception of the holding rivets, and one of these parts is movable.
Now referring more specificially to the drawing l and 2 represent the cooperative back portions of an ordinary loose leaf binder. These portions are slidably adjustable one upon the other, and
are equipped with telescopically adjustable tubular members 3 and 4 for insuring proper registration of the portions of the binder as well as holding the loose leaves therein.
The attachment comprising the invention consists of the ratch bar 5 which is fixed as by rivets or otherwise to the inner face adjacent one end of one back portion and the slidable member 6 which is shown as carried upon the inner face of the other portion of the binder, it being attached to same as by the rivets 1 mounted within elongated slots 8 through the member 6. This member is turned upwardly as at 9 upon its outer free end and. has projecting inwardly therefrom a shelf like portion ID, the under side of which is serrated or similarly notched as at l l to that of the bar 5. A portion of the turned up end 9 of the member 6 extends materially above the shelf H) to provide convenient contact as by the thumb or fingers of the operator, so that the member 6 may be readily slid in or out as required, and,
obviously, when in its outermost position as shown in Figure 1, there results no contacting of the ratch members and thus no holding of the parts together; whereas when the member 6 is in its innermost position with the ratch members overlappingly contacting, it firmly holds the two portions of the back tightly together and in any desired adjusted position.
While we have shown the slidable member 6 as fastened upon the inner face of one of the back 5 portions, the same may be let into same, or function on the outer face thereof, if so desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A loose leaf binder comprising cover members. each having an end turned at right angles forming a back portion, said back portions being adjustable in respect to each other for varying the capacity of the binder, means for holding said back portions in any adjusted position, said means comprising a ratch bar secured adjacent either end of one back portion, a slidable member secured adjacent either end of the other back portion, each slidable member having one end turned at right angles, said turned end being provided with a ratch flange integrally formed therewith and overlappingly engageable with its respective ratch bar.
2. The combination with a loose leaf binder having two cooperative overlapping back portions, of a ratch bar fixed adjacent to and parallel with the end edge of one of said portions, and a slidable member attached to the other back portion, said slidable member having one end thereof turned at right angles a short distance and then provided with a ratched flange for selective overlapping engagement with said ratch bar and first mentioned back portion whereby to prevent the separation of said portions.
3. The combination with a loose leaf binder having two cooperative overlapping back portions, of a ratch bar fixed adjacent the end edge of one of said back portions, and a slidable member attached to the other back portion and normally slidable between said back portions, said slidable member having one end thereof turned at right angles and having a ratched flange projecting inwardly from said turned end for selective overlapping engagement with said ratch bar and first mentioned back portion whereby to prevent the separation of said portions, and characterized by lying substantially flush with the ends of said cooperative portions when the ratch members are in locked cooperative engagement.
4. The combination with a loose leaf binder having two cooperative back portions, of means for holding said portions in various adjusted positions comprising a ratch bar fixed adjacent to and longitudinally of one end of one portion, and a relatively short adjustable member carried by the other back portion and having a channel-like ratched outer terminal for selective overlapping engagement with said ratch bar, said adjustable member normally lying intermediate of said back portions and functioning to hold same united when the ratch members are cooperatively engaged.
5. The combination with a loose leaf binder having two cooperative back portions, of means for holding said portions together and in various adjusted positions, consisting of a pair of ratched members at either end of said back portions, two 7 of said ratched members being fixed transversely to the back portions one adjacent either end and the other two ratched members beingindepend-
