` ..F'ASTENER rlhis invention relates to ,improvementsjin c 3j' 1 .f .w 'ff'lf .1.r fastening devices 4and has Iparticular Xrefer; ence tomefans for ffastengingfpapersin files.
" Animportant object'f'the'finventin is 'to provide` 'a'V i l fastener adapted `to` y'secure any number of'papers in 'a file vfolder 's'oI as to avoid projection l'of the wfasteningfmeans"outsideofthe folder. "i
A further object of the inventioi'i the j ,Pive'nted from engagement'jwuth 'the fastening 1;' n; `1.1-*1Vv device so as to tear therfiles and permit each individual folder2 to be frnn'theA filing cabinet. -s
A still further objf'ct of the' inventionis to y'providefa `fastening devicewhich is of simple 'yet durable construct-ion and can be placed upon the market at a very .low cost.
Other objects and advantages ofthis invention will become apparent as the descrip- In the accompanying drawing forming a V part of this specification and in which like numerals sponding I1 ign re are employed'to designate correparts throughout the same: 1 1s a top plan view of a folder showing the device constructed in accord` ance with my .invention mounted thereon,
Figure 2 is a partial end elevation showing the device inoperative position and in engagement with a file folder' and papers therein, I
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the same, Figure e is an enlarged yperspective view of a portion of a piercing element used in connection with device,
Figure 5 lis a perspective view of the entire piercing member, and
Figure 6 is an end elevation of the device shown in FigureV 5.
It is well known that the fastening de-` vices commonly employed for securing cor; respondence papers and the like in file holders necessarily require that a portion of the fastener extend outside of the folder, usually from the rear. rThis feature'is veryl objectionable as thefolders are usually filed in a comparatively close manner in the filing cab.- vinet and 1t 1s difficult to withdraw one of these folders without also withdrawing a number of others or damaging the adjacent folders.r My invention resides primarily in the provision of a fastening device adapted to secure the papers Within the file folders so as to obviate any projection which would interfere jvith 'of ithe af y A'cent folders.

piercing member generally indicated by the numeral 15. VThis piercing member embodies a longitudinal shank of tapered formation 16 provided `on one end ,with a tine 'point 17 so as to readily pierce paper sheets. The
opposite end of vthe shank 16 is somewhat j enlarged and carries a slit sleeve 18 preferably formed Vat an angular inclination to the shank. This sleeve 18 embraces the free end of the cord le and vis tightly secured` thereon, preferably being crimped so as to obviate the possibility of pulling the piercing member from the cord.
It is obvious from the foregoing4 descrip tion that my improved fastener will be dis posed entirely within theffile folder 10 without the formation of any projections on the outside of the folder. j, l
l In use, the fastener would be secured to the inner side of the folder in thev aforementioned mannerv and the sheets of corre` spondence paper or the like secured in position by passing the piercing member through the paper adj acent its upper edge and drawing the cord through the opening formed therein.
