UNITED STATES PATENTOFFIGE.
THOMAS H. SHAHAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPER FASTENERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,206, dated September 17, 1878; application filed August 27, 1878.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. SHAHAN, of Boston, in the county of Suiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BottleStoppers, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to produce an improved fastening device for bottle-stoppers which shall be cheap and simple in construction, and which will hold the stopper securely in the bottle against any possibility of accidental removal by pressure from within.
To this end my invention consists of two bent-wire braces, secured by loops at their lower ends to loops formed on opposite sides of a wire band surrounding the neck of the bottle just below the flange around the upper part of the same, said braces being bent at their upper ends, so as to set over the stopper when said ends are brought together, and provided with fastening devices by which they may be secured together, as more fully hereinafter specified.
In the drawing, Figures l and 2 represent views of my'v improved fastening device, and
Figs. 3 and et views of a' modication thereof.
The letterA represents a bottle of ordinary construction, and B a wire band encircling the neck of the same just below the ange C, formed on the upper part of said bottle. The said band is formed with loops E diametri cally opposite each other, in which are secured the loops F, formed on the lower ends of the wire braces G Gr. Said braces are bent inwardly toward each other at their upper ends, so as to embrace and hold the stopper H when brought together, and are of such conformation that one may be slipped over the other and the two secured against accidental separation by means of a suitable locking device.
In the device shown in Figs. l and 2 the brace Gr is bent into the form of an upright standard, I, at its upper end, said standard having a loop, R, at its extremity for the insertion of a pin, L, the brace G having` formed at its upper end an oblong loop, M, which may be slipped over the standard I, and secured thereon by means of the pin L.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4t the brace G has an oblong loop formed at its upper end, and is bent upwardly and then horizontally, forming a shoulder, over which the brace G' catches, the horizontal bend at the extremity of the brace G forming a detent for the reception of a pawl, N, loosely secured to the upper extremity of the brace G', by means of which the two braces are locked together over the stopper.
.The fastening device as above constructed does not require a stopper of special construction, but may be used with cork, rubber, or other ordinary stopper, and as the parts are simple in construction, it will be evident that the device can be supplied to the trade very cheaply, while it o'ers the greatest security, as the cork can be locked absolutely into posi tion against any possible displacement by accident.
The combination, with abottle, of two bentwire braces, each secured by loops at their lower ends to loops formed on opposite sides of a band encircling the neck of the bottle, said braces being bent at their upper ends, so as to set over and hold the stopper when brought together, and provided with fastening devices by which they may be locked together, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
THOS. H. SHAHAN.
Witnesses:
